Buying 996 with IMS making noise

Here is the question what do I pay for a 1999 996 the motor was replaced and the seller says the IMS is making noise. the Seller is asking $15000 canadian the car has 165,000 KM what would you pay for this?

thanks

I wouldn't, if the motor was replaced why is the IMS making noise? New engins can cost between $15K and $20K (US), this would tell me he's not maintained the car so you have to ask what else could be wrong? If you really want it, low ball $6,7,8,9K, but IMO I would stear clear, there are pleanty of Porsche's out ther that are good for $15k.

FLA996TT thanks for the reply I was thinking the same thing the cars overall condition has to be questioned? he doesn't seem that flexible on price he thinks he has priced it right considering the issue.... the search will continue

What to pay? Your final respects. The engine is likely going to be toast soon if it is not already and the car will probably end up in the salvage yard.

I wouldn't buy a 996 with an IMS bearing that was making noise.

How can you hear the IMS sound ? What does that sound like ?

It pretty much sounds like grinding from the rear, kinda like if you have a ball of aluminum foil and roll it in your hands.

Dude...PASS! This car needs brakes, tires, and the IMS! Engines run US$15-20k, tires $1K, brakes $1200. With all of this in need or repair I can't even begin to imagine what else is wrong with it.
This car is worth $5k at best.

PASS

Does anyone really know what noise an IMS bearing would make, and if so, how? I wonder if this is a noisy cat or muffler. The 99's have double row bearings, which makes an IMS breach considerably less likely than otherwise. Might be worth a PPI if everything else is terrific. If the noise nevertheless is from the engine (whether or not the IMS), certainly best to move away quickly.

Pay 5k drive the crap out of it. If engine blows pop in a ls v8 rsr body work. Supercar!
