2000 C2 stalls when wet??

I have only had my C2 for two weeks, but I have noticed that both times I have had it washed the engine will turn over and immediately stall. This goes on for a minute or two and it will finally begin running normally. Is there a sensor getting wet, perhaps water getting in through the spoiler? Short of not washing my lovebug splattered new toy what can I do to prevent this?

Thanks!

Sounds like water getting into the intake. If you wash it yourself, which you should be, no car wash, take a plastic sandwich bag and put it over the intake and gently close the deck to prevent water from getting into it. Don't forget to remove prior to starting.

I would also remove the filter and make sure the drain holes are free of any dirt.

I'll try that, thank you. It also has a K&N filter on it, do you think this is a source of moisture getting in? Should I bag that too?

That's the issue! Bag the filter, I assumed you had the standard air box.

It's not the filter - it's the water. However simply getting water on the filter won't cause your problem. I home power wash, or at the self-wash when the weather is too cold to bring out my sprayer and have NEVER had a problem. I have a dual intake system with 2 open filters and again I've never had an issue. Make sure you're not spraying directly down into the engine bay but these engines work fine in the rain without issue.

Did it throw any codes? You may have one or more cracked coil packs. If you decide to replace them, I would do all 6 along with spark plugs and spark plug tubes/o-rings(pre '02). The plastics and rubber deteriorate faster with age and heat.

There were no warning lights lit on the dash - where else would I check for codes? Is there a thread you could point me to?

I've only had the car a short time but since this is Florida I have driven in a torrential downpour and it was fine. There must be something about the angle of the water when washing, maybe the seal on the spoiler isn't seated correctly, something like that?? The car only has 25k miles on it but suppose seals could still deteriorate with age. I am going to try to wash it today with the K&N bagged and see if that solves the problem. Wish me luck!

Let us know how it turns out.

By the way, I'm in Brandon!

Let the leg humping begin...

You can either buy a generic code reader or places like Autozone will read your trouble codes for free.

Even if you don't have any lights on, semi bad coil packs can make the light come and go. In my case the damn CEL light bulb actually blew out so I was riding around with cracked coil packs until it got worse.

Hey now, look who's talking;)... he's just trying to be friendly!

Or try the enthusiast option (996 falls under) http://www.durametric.com/default.aspx. Get the pro if you plan on hooking up to more than one car.

FYI, The AutoZone on Brandon Blvd can read the codes for you. I've used them many times. Might be worth checking out.
