Swapping out Air / Oil Separator (AOS)

Hey all!

While waiting for my new alternator to come in, I found out my local shop wanted $2100+ to change my AOS that was starting to leak (and therefore couldn't pass a tech inspection last weekend). Did a search and found I could do it by dropping the engine, or removing the top of the engine. I decided to remove the stuff on top of the engine.

Started at 1pm, and had it all out by 5. Took a bit longer since I was looking at a writeup for a different style AOS (mine has 2 bolts from the top, others have it on the side).

Anyway, was quite messy in there. But it was SO easy to get to. Didn't remove the coolant res. And I didn't have to go UNDER the car either.

One little mishap though. Broke the coolant connector while throwing my ape arms in and out of the engine bay... wondering if I can't just use a regular connector there instead of the $22 OEM part...?

Have the new stuff on order, and will clean it all up till then!

Nice work Bill, how many miles on the car when the leak developed? I plan some PM work soon,my car has 80K. The AOS is a bit intimidating . I had a Indy quote $450.00 to replace mine, it has a very small leak(sweating).

Just passed 80k ourselves. Ours had JUST started "sweating" as well. Glad to have found other little odds and ends while I was in there. And really not too much of a job (so far)!

Also kinda weird... Its quite obvious someone has had this engine out (or at least apart) before. Instead of "torx" bolts holding the intake on, it was regular 10mm bolts. There were more than a few zipties (not very German?). But I am really glad I was able to get in there an "clean it up"....!

I'll post more when the new parts start going in. Have a great week all!

Bill
