Installed Cargraphic Supersports - Quick/Silly Question

I installed Cargraphic Supersports on my 996. I have not gotten around to putting the tips back on. That said, the exhaust dumps out behind the rear bumper but safely within heat shields (where the tips normally would hook up).

Is it possible that the exhaust is louder without tips? My thinking is
1. The dump off inside a cavity which causes a lot of noise reflection
2. the cavity is inside the bumper and thus heard more inside the car and
3. the outlet is facing down so you might get echo off the concrete of the road
4. The tips provide some level of sound reduction (but I highly doubt this)

Why am I asking this? Because they seem too loud for me I can take them off now and sell them and save labor time on putting the tips on. Also I am replacing the ring clamps at $10/each and it is probably best to only use them once. So putting the tips on will cost me $20 in parts.

Or if there is a chance it will quiet down a bit I might go ahead and put on the tips and keep them.

All this said, man do they sound nice albeit loud. Lots of gurgle, crackle and pop. Especially during slow downs.

Don't mess around with the exhaust outlet, it should not be behind the bumper, if it doesn't clear the bumper you risk getting Co2 into the cabin, very dangerous. If the tips will make it clear the bumper then you need to put the tips on, and yes that would calm the noise inside.

Thanks! Just to be clear I had no intention of driving it tips off. I just had not gotten around to installing them yet That said, I did fire it up only to hear what I thought was WAY too much sound I do appreciate the kind advice and concern on Co2. No question there.

On the slight chance the sounds drops a bit, I'll install the tips and run it for a while. If I like it I will keep the Cargraphics. If it is too loud, I'll revert to stock.

Okay, Grasshopper... in order to experience how they really sound, you have to drive your 996 with the new mufflers to experience the sound in the cabin. Put the tips on and drive her...you have a great system.

Indeed. Will do.. new clamps come tomorrow. The CG has an odd but more adjustable set up. The outlet has an extension and that extension connects to the stock tips. So I'll need to connect up the extension first, leave it loose and then connect the tips to it. Align the whole thing and then tighten both the tips and extension in place. (Assuming there is room in there to get to the bolts.)

You should have a little room to get the bolts on. Its an extremely awkward space. I know this because awhile back I tucked my tips under a bit more because one was slightly further out than the other!

Was contemplating swapping for standard tips but I dont have the extensions.

IMO, I think you'll still find them too loud. Out of the 5 different exhaust I tried on my car, the sound didn't change that much with and without tips, volume wise. YMMV

Keep us updated.

Wow. Big lesson learned, get the tips on the car nice and loose before even putting the muffler on. I managed to get the right side Extension connected to the muffler and positioned it to receive the tip. Problem is I can't simultaneously hold the tip up and tighten a brand new clamp on. Stupid gravity. Will need a helper. Can't ask the wife to help though because while we work on it she will ask me questions like her "What was wrong with the original mufflers?" me- "Nothing" her "So why are we doing this?" and on and on...

Should be able to wrap this up over the weekend and will report back. While the tips were off I hit them with some steel wool 0000 to make the best of them. That said, they are pretty beat up. I'll want to pull the decorative part off of the pipe and have it professionally repolished if costs make sense.

I've decided no matter how loud they are, I'll keep them for at least a year. If anyone wants Cargraphics in a year just let me know

Ok so no question the inside cabin noise and vibration is back to normal. With tips on.

Keep in mind the cargraphics outlet pipe is shorter than stock. This explains why it was so loud with the extension and tips off.
So other mufflers may not be louder without tips.

FLA996tt glad you responded because I might have removed the mufflers when I heard them originally! These will work just right. You can drive conservative and they aren't obnoxious for date night with wifey. Idle is quiet with a light growl. Step on it and they come to life
