Air Con Coolant Leak
 

Hi all,

There's a slow freon leak in my 2002 996's air con. The leak has been identified to be somewhere in the wind box behind the dash. The garage wants to charge like US$1000 for the labor, because they say it's a labor-intensive job which requires taking off the entire dash board and what-not.

Is there some kind of sealant additive or other means/ways of making the repair w/o the stated work? (hope this is not a dumb question...)

That's a good deal. Have you ever tried to remove the dash in a 996? Not for the weak at heart. Major job.

No alternative. Get the A/C refrigerant leak fixed which in this case I believe requires an evaporator be replaced.

Afterwards the system should be evacuated for some time to remove any moisture and confirm the system is leak free.

Then the system is refilled with the proper amount of refrigerant and compressor oil.

Every A/C component that is exposed to refrigerant and compressor oil when removed accounts for a certain amount of lost oil that must be replaced. The factory manual has a chart.

If you take the car to a Porsche dealer service department the tech will know all of the above and more. He is also most experienced in disassembling the dash/interior of the car to access the leaking component and getting the dash back together with no irritating squeaks or rattles.
