(Listed in best case to worst case scenario)

1. Faulty oil separator

2. Leaking head gasket

3. Cracked head

4. Cracked cylinder chambers

None are good, but i am hoping its not #3, or #4. Thinking about those two scenarios makes me wanna smoke crack! I cant believe these design problems exist in a car that cost 90K new? And this car only has 35K miles! Anybody know how much an engine costs, with installation?? This sucks!

Okay guys it seems the problem has turned from "worst case scenario" to "hopeful"!!!! I have been starting the car every morning for 5 minutes before i go to work, and noticed the smoke has been gradually decreasing. This morning i started her up and almost no smoke came out. So when i got home i started her up and no smoke came out, so i drove her around for a few miles to see if any lights or warnings came on, and nothing. (yippeee!!) I checked the engine area and under the car and found no leaks or low fluids. Im thinking the smoke symptoms are a result of what wittenbergj and deputydog95 wrote. I will still get her checked out, and keep yall posted.

I know a guy, every time he takes it to the track for a drivers ed, and lets it sit for 40 min between run groups and then starts it a white puff of smoke comes out for a few seconds. He spoke to the dealership and apparently under hard cornering some oil goes somewhere and then when its sits it seeps down and then gets burnt on the next start-up. This guy has done this several times and has seen this from a few others.

puffs of white smoke on startup isn't a big deal. my dealer says it looks like london fog in the morning when they start moving the cars around the lot :)

however, i would be a little more concerned to see it after the car has been running for a while.

wow, we need to get you into the "quoting other posters 101" course asap! what a mess :D

Well...maybe his head was somewhere else. I know mine would be if I was looking a possible cracked head/cylinder. But, if it turns out to be a false alarm we can beat him up for sure.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, I turned hard on an on-ramp...right turn. When I got onto the highway I floored it through 3rd and 4th, when I saw a HUGE cloud of smoke. It filled 4 lanes wide with smoke! I immediately pulled over and shut it down. I called my mechanic and he advised that it is not unheard of and if the engine light didn't come on then it was nothing. I cautiously started the car again only to find more smoke coming from the exhaust. He reassured me it was fine and after 10 minutes of driving it all burned off and has never come back.

My mechanic advised that it was probably the oil seperator and that if there was the slightest problem at all, the oversensitive engine light would have come on.

Bottom line, call your mechanic first for advise. If you want to be freaked out, post a thread and you must expect any possible answer. I'm not knocking anyone here, just remember posting and responding here is not the same as speaking to a tech.

What color was your smoke, bluish?

donuts Apr 6, 2007 05:27 PM

You know what, I'm not too sure, I just remember it was a lot of smoke.... It was more white than blue... but my oil level went down 2 ticks after the incident...

I looked under the oil cap and there was no white suds, but i did notice the coolant low. I will add more today.

BTW i should be able to finally post pictures of my p-car tonight. Sorry this Newbie has be laggin but finally had the time and the weather was right. Stay tuned.

My guess is oil. The same white smoke happened to me when the spark plug sleeves on my 996 cracked from lack of use. I don't think water vapor will produce white smoke. Maybe some oil is getting into your exhaust... but most likely my thoughts are it's just oil leaking somewhere and burning.

No, burning oil will produce whitish smoke with a district blue hue. Coolant will produce snow-white smoke.
