New Turbo break in???
 

Picking up my '08 Turbo next week. Do I need to do a break in process or is that bs? My cls63 amg required a 1000 mile break in and it was torture...

It's supposed to be 2000miles for a Turbo but.... :D

I'm at 900 miles and have been pretty good about staying below 4,200 RPM's....I hit 5,000 once when I tried to shift from 4th to 5th but 3rd instead..bonehead move I know, but the sport shifter feels a bit notchy right now. Agreed, the wait is torture. Most say that 2,000 miles is not necessary but I'm trying to stay good!

I just drove my new 08 home from Washington State (1,300 miles) in 2 days. Speed was never over 155, and I consider it broken in now. It burned zero oil on the trip. Cool weather, rain and a bit of snow made the oil and water temps stay nice and cool, and the rain going through the intercoolers allowed them to cool the intake charge very nicely. Vary the revs, use all the gears, don't lug it.

the motors are dynoed at wot before they enter the car, I doubt it's about motor break in more drive train and brakes. I kept it to 4k the first 500 mi and 4,500 until apprx 1,000 mi. after that I did some wot but kept it under 5,500. at 1,500 mi wot to 6k with over boost,
6,300 at 2k mi. I may have babied the car but it runs like a bat out of hell at this point.

That information is in the owner's manual which in turn comes straight from the source. I'd definitely follow those as a guideline. 4,200 rpms or lower for the first 2,000 miles varying the rev inbetween and as Dick said, no lugging.

A Porsche salesman told me he felt the break in period was more a safety issue then a motor break in requirement. Since the tires and brakes are brand new you need to put some miles on them so they can perform properly under all conditions! This sounds very reasonable to me. Doug

I broke mine in hard. The car uses no oil.

500km or so w/o hitting redline (on purpose) hilarious, no speed control...then it's a go.

thanks guys, I've got a 250 mile drive home from picking it up so that will help, after that I'll take some of your advice and take it easy for the first 1000 miles or so. Thanks again! I can't wait - Lot's of exterior and performance mods already ordered, I'll post pics as soon as it's complete.

There are many opinions about break in. In the past, I have stayed at or below 4,200 RPM's for 2,000 miles. For me, that's about 6 months since my P cars are not DD's. It's torture. The car is dynoed at the factory, and are meant to be driven. I just picked up my 2008 Cab, and the last words the dealer told me were, "Enjoy the car, drive it, and don't baby it by not going over 4,200 Rpm's". Gotta tell ya, its been a lot more fun driving the car as it supposed to be during the first 200 miles then its been in all my other cars!

break in info from the owners manual states hints and helpful advice rather then WARNING icons. mine smoked when I finally went wot, after a couple hundred miles of driving the car agressively smoke stopped and oil consumption is dropped....break in after 1k mi is bs imo.

2K miles isnt that bad.....

Some cars dont FULLY break-In until 5K or 6K miles. If you drive it right(keyword) during the first 1-2K your motor will run like a beast. Go through all the RPM kepp it under 4,200-4,500RPM. Use all the gears and do alot of downshifting. Let the engine get both worlds. WOT & cruising. I did that with my 997TT and runs soo good.

2,000 tortuous miles.

Recommended and I stuck to it 95% of the time. A few times I did forget temporarily.


The magic number comes up fast..

I say just go for it. First 2000 miles for safety and legal reasons.
