We finished the left side turbo and began to build the intercooler pipes to replace the factory plastic smooshed ones. These are 2.5" aluminum piping that will go to each intake. We are ovalizing part of the pipe for clearance issue. Will have more pics soon :)

Looks like a nice project and serious upgrade. Is there any shielding used to protect the turbos and everything that is added...it seems very low to ground and on a lowered car it would seem clearance may be an issue.

Congrats on what's looking like an amazing build.

nice write up dan

vividracing Jan 28, 2009 06:25 PM

No issue on the clearance. Same height as the stock turbos. Tomorrow I will show you some of the intercooler pipe we finished.

Rep points for you ed!

We are fabbing up the intercooler pipe. Because of where the GT30 sits, we cannot use the stock piping plus the angle would have great flow restrictions. Here are some of the shots.

Dan,
The first pic just above looks like turbo inlet piping.

Is there enough room to come right off the turbo inlet with a very short 3" i.d. elbow, and then neck it down a bit and run it up to the filters?
It might be a smoother path into the turbos.

Just curious because it looks like that fabbed section is 2", and it may restrict inlet airflow at your power levels.

You definitely know how it all fits in there better than I do, just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

vividracing Jan 29, 2009 05:08 PM

the piping is actually 2.5". The problem is all clearance. If you did an immediate hook off the turbos, it would be like the air flow would just stop, no way to make a smooth bend. Using the stock intake location, the improve that intercooler piping, 2.5" is still bigger. We actually ovalize some of the tube to clear where it needs to be.

vrybad Jan 29, 2009 05:19 PM

So the piping in the first picture just above my last post is intercooler piping?
(I'm referring to the first pic in your post, not the second pic)
It looks like it is running right to the compressor inlet.
That is why I was asking, it doesn't look like charge air piping.

vividracing Jan 29, 2009 05:20 PM

Sorry in the Subaru, EVO world we call that intercooler piping. Yes it is charge piping that goes from the compressor inlet of the turbo to the intakes.

vrybad Jan 29, 2009 05:25 PM

Gotcha, I've always referred to it as inlet piping.
Like I said, you know how it all fits better than me.
My mind is always trying to find ways to improve things, hope you understand!
Nice job!
