3 piece rims/ dealer said they are junk after 5k miles
I took in my 997 turbo because of a leak in the tire. The dealer called and said that they took off all the tires and the rims were all dented up. The car has 5000 miles on it and has really never hit a thing that could have caused any damage. They said that 2 of the 3 barrells in each rim needed to be replaced. One of the tires was replaced just 20 miles prior......20...and they did not mention a thing then about any damage to the wheels. On top of all this they claim that the tires now need to be replaced....Including the one that I just paid $600 for 20 miles ago, because the rim pinched them.
Has anyone ever heard of something like this? Should I get a second opinion or just cut my losses and get a set of 1 piece rims?

That sounds alittle out of line. I would get a second opinion as other members have suggested. We have been running 3-piece wheels for years with no problems. I would make sure that your silicon seal is still intact before you start replacing your lips and inner barrels. If you need any further information, please feel free to contact myself or Tom.

They are 20's.
I just can't see how they could sell, or why anyone would buy such a product. Is there any point in getting it repaired, if I am not aware of the reason they broke.

You should really get it check out by a highend tire and wheel place.. P dealer love telling you something is wrong with aftermarket parts....
If your wheels are true 3 peice wheels, I'd be very weary of this explanation. Take it somewhere else

If you get them repaired, realize the tire is likely already damaged from the impact.
Unfortunately, from an engineering standard point, with a 20 inch wheel, there is VERY little between the road and the wheel. These types of wheels are decorative, and the dealer/shop should have warned you that they are really only for very smooth roads. There is a reason why no race/competitive car has 20 inch wheels. They are heavier, and couldn't handle the forces. 19 inch is rare, and 18's are the normal in racing. Massive loads on the rims as there is little to no tire to dampen the impact. Sorry you found out the hard way.

It is also quite simple to buy 20 inch wheels that weigh the same as the 19s that come on the car.
Most important is the engineering and metallurgy involved. Most US-made 3-piece wheels use inners and outers sourced from the same two companies; Triangle and ARS, both based in SoCal. These rim components are cast aluminum and are spun, NOT FORGED, from either 6061, 5052 or 5454 aluminum. The rims are not especially strong and are prone to bending and deformation when used on rough roads. They are also easily repaired.
If you are having trouble with bent rims, I suggest you switch to one of the top brands of forged monoblock wheels. They are light, very strong and will resist damage from normal road hazards.
Any of the top tuners listed to the right can steer you in the right direction.
