who said breaking in is all about the engine? sure they may be broken in at factory, or race engines are broken in hard.... but what about the tires/brakes/transmission, etc.? although 2k miles is probably a bit of overkill. i would take it easy for the first few hundred miles.

we always break our cars in, but it is and will always be a debatable topic.

OP asked:

"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Is break in procedure really necessary? Manual says not to go beyond 4500 rpm until 2k miles. Will my engine be damaged if I do full throttle few times during break in period? I have 2010 tt. thanks"

On my recent factory tour (last month) I was told only 1 in 20 are hot tested.
The rest are cold tested.

Yes, make sure you do what the sales person told you. “Drive it hard from day one and I will see you soon . Or the independent shop you have it serviced at might tell you. “Drive it hard from day one, it is already broken in.”

My experience has shown that a car which is broken in according to my schema will produce more reliable HP. Since I only drive my car 1000 to 2000 miles per year, it took me 12 moths to break the car in. If you are still a skeptic, I can match my car up against other cars of equal or slightly more HP to see how she performs. I have stock K24’s with an exhaust and clutch. I estimate my car is producing around 460HP to the wheels. We can video tape the run. Any takers?

Even if it's only 1 in 20 that are hot tested, it still suggests there is no damage to the engine. Just use common sense and not abuse it. Abuse anything and it will have a shorter life span. A few hard pulls here and there during break-in won't "damage" anything which is what the OP is asking.
