I'm in the market for my first Porsche.. I have a few questions...

I have been reading alot on the forum the past few days because I'm ready to get a 997. I love the body styling and stance.
I currently own a 2006 z06 since it came out, and went nuts heavily modifying it... Coilovers and sways, Stoptechs, Seats, 4 core radiator, the cars makes about 580rwhp. I also road race it alot so it's taking a heavy beating. I need a great streetable ride. Reliable for going to dinner with the wifey.. That's why I dont want to mod this too much.
It's time to add something else to the stable.. I'm tired of modding... well a little tired. Maybe intake and tune. I know on these turbo cars you pick up 70rwhp.
That's great, but I'm done with cam, heads, etc. Loud exhaust forget it.
I want refined style with some balls.

What's the differences between a 997.1 and 997.2?
Whats the differences between a 2008 and 2010?
Can I get the PDK in an 08?

Thanks for your help. I hope to be driving one soon.:D

DFI engine, PDK transmission availability, revised suspension, PTV

see above

no

You cannot get the PDK in 2008. The 997.2 engine is DFI and is not the same engine at all as the 997.1. There are people that like each from my take on it. the 997.1 guys like the 'race heritage' of the metzger engine and the reliability since it's 'tried and tested'.. The 997.2 is more modern, however. You'd most likely be happy with either.

Interior electronics are better on the 10's as they are PCM 3 and can have easier access to bluetooth, Ipod, etc (the 2008's can as well, but more difficult and 3rd party)

As for modifications, exhaust on turbo cars are almost a needed to really extract the power. However, you can have a 'not so loud' exhaust and performance increase. There are a lot of people concerned with too loud on exhausts, myself included, so there are many exhausts that cater to that need of sound but no drone.

What suspension did they update for '10?

Is the body styling the same on the 2008 or 2009 as the 2010?

How's the automatic in the 08/09? Is it better than the 996 tiptronic?

A friend has a 996 turbo and his car down low has serious lag. I wouldn't be happy with that. I would not be opposed to a stick. The mrs. won't be driving it anyway:D.

Whats PTV?

Thanks.

Body styling 08 and 09 are the same. 2010 has some very minor changes including different wheels.

2010 PDK is by far the best auto option. Far better than tip.

997 is much better regarding turbo lag than 996 both in stock form. 2010 with PDK turbo lag is all but unnoticeable in stock.

PTV stands for Porsche Torque Vectoring. More info here

If you want to mod, get a pre-2010 GT1 block, one of the most modable engines ever made and w/ a proper tune will put 700 whp down all day every day.

If you don't want to mod much, want a turn key car that is faster and much nicer than the z06, a true point and shoot supercar, then get the 2010 PDK w/ Chrono.

Also, 2009 is an interesting transition year for 997.1TTs.
They got upgraded electronics and revised TPM system. Best of both worlds - old school racing heritage with new bells and whistles (Touchscreen navigation, smartphone integration, voice control, and XM).

Not an easy decision. They are both great cars. The 2010 PDk with paddles is probably the best street sports car made. It does 0-60 in 2.9 secs. Porsche engineering at it's finest.

+1 . there's also about a $70K difference where the least expensive would be an exhaust and flash on a used Turbo OR an already modified car that was pampered.

Price being no object -- Turbo "S" =best stock car right out of the box.

I have a tip car, the old bum knee finally doth protested too much. I don't get all the hate for this tranny, as in manual mode it works pretty much flawlessly. Granted it doesnt shift in 0.007 nanoseconds, but I couldn't justify an extra 70 grand for the novelty of "faster" shifts. I know one thing though, the tip is waaaayyyy better at shifting than I am.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys.. I have an opportunity that just presented itself. It wasn't the road I was looking to take, but let me know what you think.

A 2001 996 with EVO 700 kit. GT2 body kit, and new engine installed by Porsche because the guy blew the last motor due to the sleeves not being propery installed on the modded engine. It's a manual and the car itself has 12k miles. While the engine has under 500.
Of coures I'm taking a chance with some one elses mods and all. But the price seems pretty good for a 20k engine mod. The front wheel drive is also disconected so It's only rear wheel. I ran the guy once in my z and he smoked me. I had to spray him with a 100 shot to win.:D

It looks very sexy.
The car is in mint condition, around $60K..

Your thoughts.....

valex Apr 18, 2010 12:26 PM

car seems a bit high. Modded cars don't usually add that much value. If anything they can detract value.

cc08gt2 Apr 18, 2010 12:27 PM

Overpriced. Not even close to what you asked.

ViciousZ Apr 18, 2010 12:36 PM

So what should a modded car like this go for? If I like it, I can always negotiate.. It seems like most 2001 with 40 -50k miles in stock form are around 45k.. Should my offer be in that ball park?
