Where's your boost level?

I have been going a little nuts trying to get a my head around boost, psi and bar levels. Would love some input on what everyone is getting:

I assume if would be most helpful to list your year and we might as well list max boost levels in sport mode.

Max Stock Boost

Max Boost w ECU tune (please list tune if not in your signature)

Max Boost w Whatever ya got (all mods and upgrades)

I made the mistake of not paying attention to what I was getting before my mods but I will take a reading tomorrow if it's not raining and post.

Ok my top psi was 17. Anyone else?

What are you using to measure boost?

Arone997tt May 18, 2010 09:02 PM

boost gauge give psi..not bar...think he wants to know what psi translates to

The boost meter on the dash can be programmed for standard (PSI) and metric (BAR).

It is, however, a fairly inaccurate measuring device. Even the sensor itself isn't terribly accurate, and the sliding bar meter on the dash is more of a gimmick than a tuning device.

never knew that..thanks

Didn't think the bar option meant anything but are you saying the "psi" number is also inaccurate?

The dash board gauge is not very accurate.

Most tuners plot a datalog of boost during the development of ECU management for a specific configuration. At WOT, a stock 997TT will read 17 psi on sport mode throughout the RPM range. If you ask a tuner for a plot, you will find there is actually fluctuation throughout the RPM band, which is not reflected by the dash board gauge.

Your tuner will be able to tell you what the maximum PSI programmed for a specific tune should be. A stock 997TT should be producing around 1Bar at WOT, and 1.2Bar in sport mode WOT.

Thanks!

The boost meter is porgrammed to only read a maximum of 18 or 17 psi. Even if you were boosting higher than that, it will not reflect on the factory boost guage. If your car is tuned with an ECU and exhaust, you are boosting quite a bit more than that.

I was wondering just that. Thanks. Would be interested to know where it really is. I remember on my 01 Gemballa the boost meter was actually accurate or so I was told. Stock 996s were boosting around .9 bar and mine used to show 1.4+.

I think you have figured it out already but "bar" and "psi" are just different units used to measure the same parameter (i.e.: feet and meters, miles and kilometers, etc.). The cluster displays is equally inaccurate regardless of the units displayed.

1 bar = 14.5 psi.
