What's the real skinny on the 2011 997 Turbo's Performance
 

Just got back picking up my Carrera from Performance Collision... Hennessey Porsche is just around the corner so I stopped in.

Was talking to one of the senior sales guys telling him that in about 18 months when my practice is paid off, I'd like to trade my Carrera 3.6L in for a faster car.

He gave me the low down on the GT2/3/Turbo... I'm thinking the Turbo S Coupe is probably whats going to suit me best.

He said the performance of the 2011 AWD Turbo S is amazing... 0-60 in about 2.7 sec? He said that the only car faster is the Veyron. He quoted me some car mag that got the 2.7 stat, and was quick to point out that Porsche conservatively reports an underestimation of the numbers.

I know HP and 0-60 times are just numbers... but 2.7? That's one quick little bugger?

And no telling what the 2012 new models will have... he said right now, to order a new 2011 Turbo S, plan on $180K-ish, or if I'm patient he said they might be able to find me Turbo S that's about 12 months old for about $20K off of MSRP.

For those with a Turbo S... what's your insight if I may ask?

One more comment.... the sales guy also indicated that at something like 530hp that the Turbo S has, there's still plenty of room to tweak more out of the stock engine.


I forget the company, maybe it was Champion... but he said they were able to get 730hp I think out of a Turbo S.... not sure what all they did, but his point was that the stock Turbo S drive train can handle up to about 700hp.

You need to test drive it and you will realize how fast it is... It is scary fast! I am not sure about milking any more horsepowers, 530hp is plenty for me! Do remember that the 2.7s 0-60mph is the PDK version, not manual! I've try flooring the car and shift myself, but I can't even shift that fast with PDK, better to drive it in automatic mode and just floor the gas pedal and prepare to wet your pants...

BTW, all dealers I have talked to give discounts on this car!

You can get almost $20k off a brand new Turbo S.

Wait a year and a lightly used one will most likely save you $50k the way 911 Turbo's depreciate!

I don't think you can get $20K off a new turbo S. Where can I get this deal?

My business partner just got $10k off his new 911 Turbo S last month. Give it a little bit of time and $20k won't be out of the question.

With the 997 platform on the way out, I don't know why anyone would buy a 997.2 Turbo right now. Buy a 997.1 Turbo (which has a more mod friendly, stronger engine) for $85k, and put $20k in the engine and suspension at Switzer, TPC et al. You'll have a WAY faster car for ~$50k+/- less with much less depreciation to boot when you want to sell it for a 991 Turbo in 2-3 years. JMHO :)

Why do you say that the previous engine is stronger?

Well for me I don't like someone else's problems. Nothing better than the smell of a new car and picking it up in the showroom. Not everybody mods their car and can accept loosing their warranty. And in going with the mentality of always waiting for the next best and newest thing I would end up not buying anything at all and always waiting. :D
