Most dealers will, if you ask them - but often they will charge you a PPI type of fee - $80-120.

CPO cars should have DME scans available. If a dealer won't show you on a CPO - walk away.

You may want to consider getting a Durametric cable and software - there are a lot of things you can do with it - and it scans all the data. A little bit of an investment, but worth it if you plan on keeping your car for a while.

Good question. I, like you, am in the market for a pre-owned 997.1 TT. I think that the average buyer does not know what the DME is and thus, more information is too much information. I assume they figure that they can provide it if a buyer asks, but if they don't ask, then they don't want to/need to know.
I am always amazed at the used vehicle some people buy..."I didn't know it was a salvage title!" etc....C'mon!
Then there are guys like us, that probably put a little too much time, thought, and effort into the process....Then again, it is $100,000.00!

Thanks Bob. The Durametric cable is on my list of first things to get.
I'll get a PPI/DME on the car, for sure but I'd think a dealer could use the DME results on a pre-owned listing to "one up" over a private listing. It's such a valuable piece of info.

I agree.

Most people who are looking specifically for Porsche's know that the DME data can be read from the OBD scan port. When I sold me previous cars, I always provided a print out of the data. Too bad dealerships don't do the same. It should be the standard.

You'll probably want to print this out for future reference as you shop for your car:

I'd bet they can run the scan for free so why not show the results? Maybe there are a lot of buyers who don't care about it.

I've bought 4 P-cars in the last 7 years (996 and 997) from 4 different dealers and I've always asked for DME readout and have always received at no cost. Just ask - most dealers today expect that a knowledgable buyer will ask. One dealer even provided me with a readout that was absolutely scarry - it was obvious that the car had been tracked with multiple over-revs in all 6 ranges:

Range 1 40423 ignitions
Range 2 17016 ignitions
Range 3 7149 ignitions
Range 4 2933 ignitions
Range 5 432 ignitions
Range 6 196 ignitions

Obviously I walked on this one.

My friend is looking into a Porsche and I forgot to tell him about this. Glad I caught this, thanks for the heads up!

Obviously these numbers seem very high.
But what should we be looking for..
Whats acceptable, and what isn`t
I would guess most cars would have range 1....

There's some varying opinion on this but generally speaking, anything over range 3 seems to void the factory warranty on the engine.

Only if something breaks - lots of cars running around with a few over-rev ignitions above range 3 with no problems. Decision by buyer will depend on level of risk they are willing to take.

This is great information and hugely valuable as I am about to purchase a 2005 911 Turbo S.

What, specifically, should I ask my dealership for? Just a DME readout?

Once I have that readout, I am just making sure that all ignitions are within the 1-3 range (or very few 4's)?

Are there other things (other than visual appearance) that I should look out for as clear give-aways that there may be problems with the car?

Thoughts on having a Porsche dealership do an inspection? It costs $405 but may be worth it before I drop $68K on this car.

Thank you very much in advance!

Can you provide this with complete data for the 996 Turbo please?

zeuslax Jan 4, 2011 02:54 PM

Thanks CN. How do I go about evaluating a 996TT given this information? Simply anything over Range 2 classifying as a negative towards the car?

Steamboat Jan 4, 2011 02:57 PM

I suspect there aren't very many buyers, absent those of us lurking in forums such as this or who are automotive insiders, who even know what a DME is. The P-dealership I bought my TT from told me I was the first person to request one which they happily provided free of charge. And, they sure didn't bother running one on my C4S trade-in before they accepted it.

Do dealers run DME as part of CPO qualification?
