When my water pump went out, it made I similar noise. It's not your exhaust or bones, I had the same setup for many mikes with no such noises.

water pump replaced, according to SA the noise is gone! Now they are letting car cool down to fix a leaky waterpump.....not kidding. Still, bit of good news all the same. Will report back once I get her back and listen.

Water pump was indeed the culprit. So if you hear a higher pitched whine at idle from the cabin and a hollow air sound (think blowing over half full beer bottle noise) during down shifts and coasting down, chalk that one up as a potential cause. It was impossible to listen or scope the noise from the engine bay, real bugger to track down.

Note the water pump worked just fine, but I guess the bearings or whatever were failing. Two weeks in the shop, glad to have it on the road finally.

Note I had 27,000m give or take when this occured.

msf is infamous around these parts
Thanks for the heads up on the pump. I had a high pitch noise in 2007 Cayman S. I hated that cabin noise. I test drove a 2008 Cayman S with the exact same noise. I think it was due to the hatch design. One of the many things I enjoy about the TT is a quite cabin!

lately Ive noticed a whine again, different one luckily...not kidding. Power steering for sure, much louder than its ever been. You can hear it when you turn the car etc. so off to the dealer she goes - right before the warranty expires!

Chasing down noises is annoying. I had a fairly loud buzzing between 40-60mph on delivery, turned out to be the coils in the cigarette lighter. Don't smoke so that was an easy fix.

OK, my Turbo is used (24k miles), but new to me. I'm not sure what is normal and what i should be concerned with. I can definitely hear the power stearing when I turn at low speeds, like when backling up. Not obnoxious, but but there. The car also has a "knock" at idle. Can't hear it inside, but makes the car sound cheap from outside. Don't like it, but again wondered if normal? Please advise

Did some searching and found this.. answers some of the questions:

Love this quote:
One truism I go by is: Porsche engines sound like a bucket of bolts about to spill over when at idle. IOW, they sound very unflattering when just sitting there running.
