Opticoat feedback
Swapped out my PCCB's recently with steels and track pads, the brake dust is overwhelming. In talking with my local detailer(Bob @ Auto Conierge) he recommended opticoating the wheels and calipers.
Has anyone done this? Feedback appreciated. |
I was talking to my detailer about the same thing, i too would be interested on the feedback.. Break dust is so annoying....
|
i was on the phone with a detailer today. I asked about opti coat.
his response was "opticoat is garbage". he suggseted something called liquid glass slealant or something like that. he said one applied to the clearcoat (and wheels too), you can wash teh car up to 600 times before u see a single swirl mark. |
funny my detailer told me to look at the opticoat thanks for the input... also i am always a bit worried about applying a "sealant" to any part of the car...
|
glassy
the detailer is from l.i. too lol |
Steve thats so funny he is on L.I. whats his name cause i might be in the market for a new Detailer...lol
|
I have opticoat on my paint and I like it. I did not have them do the wheels. I will say bugs clean off better.
|
Steve- interesting I have not heard any bad reviews on opticoat. I have viewed its performance in person. Ask your detailer to elaborate on "its garbage" comment.
|
this is the stuff he wants to put on my car.
www.gtechniqna.com $700 to detail the entire car. 11 hours curing time on the sealant. an extra $200 for the wheels. he said i will not have swirls for AT LEAST 2 years or 600 washes. anyone heard of this before ? this detailer is pretty well known, and comes highly recommended. |

I have 22PLE Pro Signature Glass Coating on my cars. Available from Esoteric car Care - http://esotericdetail.com/22ple-glass-coating/
Just applied a few months ago so can't speak to durability but love it so far. They also sell the gtechnigna products so would be a good source of information on the differences in the two products. |

What is Opticoat's temperature rating?
|
my wheels were opticoated, has helped a bit...rick nelson at unique car care rec it...he's the best there is
|
I have had Opticoat on my sons Subaru paint and wheels a d my wife's MDX for the last year. This is a super durable coating that cleans up easily. Whoever said it is garbage is not in the industry. You may prefer something else but the Opticoat fits a need for a super durable , easy to clean coating. I clean the opticoated wheels with plain car wash soap. I have also used GTech EXO v1. The difference is EXO is slicker feeling and tighter beading but nowhere as near mar and scratch resistant. There is a v2 EXO that addresses some of this I am told but have never used myself.

Gtechniq C1 Crystal Lacquer sealant has been very good for me so far. It’s my detailer’s gold standard. Was previously discussed (with photos) here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ml#post3887170
The detailer applied sealant to my wheels, although I can’t say whether it was the same Gtechniq product used on the paint. I have PCCB so the wheels are never very dirty, but what dirt there is cleans up easily with diluted car shampoo. Hard to say how much of that is attributable to the wheel sealant. Although harsh wheel cleaner chemicals are not necessary, after reading other detailers’ opinions on another forum, I’m particularly staying away from using harsh chemicals around the ceramic rotors. |
Fas, are you getting any swirl marks ?
This detailer told me that with Gtechniq, i will be swirl free for up to 600 washes. how is car looking now ? |

im just going to get it polished and waxed and learn how to wash my car the right way. 2 buckets, one fresh water and one w/ soap clean fresh microfiber, no tag, preferable the kind w/o any sewn seams start at top, do small sections, do wheels alone w/ separate cloth after dunking into soap and washing, dunk and rinse into fresh water removing any crud, even using the hose if necessary this will decrease any chances of swirls etc |

unfortunately i dont have a garage. those are tough to find in brooklyn. i've got a driveway. the car is exposed to the elements 24/7. I hand wash it once a week and wax.
I've got 2 buckets, i've got a foam gun that attaches to the hose (works pretty well), I've got seperate washing mitts for the car, the wheels, and the rock panels. I'm hoping that by learning the right technique (the detailer is going to give me a lesson in washing and waxing), i can be as close to swirl free as possible. Handoc, how are you drying your car ? I use a dedicated shop vac to air dry it. |
Faspilot, is your tts still swirl free ? have you washed it yet ? do you plan on applying anything after each wash ?
|
compressed air is the best way...no wash kits only the special microfiber as i discussed...i lived in nyc...cant you garage it near you?
|
negative. its all private houses and the (few)garages are spoken for. (i have to rent a driveway) a couple of houses from mine.
the pizza bro. the pizza. thats why i put up with this. |
well, i guess i can understand...i would diligently work on garage space

Great for drying. I've been using for a few years.

I have this as well. I purchased my at detailers domain simply because in NY the shipping was much less.

Im surprised no one has suggested C.Quartz. Its a ceramic based protectant that lasts for 2 years. I had my 997 done a few weeks ago. Its amazing. My detailer used C.Quartz Finest, which is the professional formula. I think the consumer version is supposed to be almost as good and a lot cheaper. As with opticoat, surface preparation and product application is of paramount importance to the performance of the product.

Opti Coat will not affect the weights from sticking the wheel.
I've done a few sets of wheels: http://autosalonworks.com |
I am a bit of a detailing geek and here is what I know. GTECH EXO is the most hydrophobic coating I have ever seen. The V1 has been on my Pcar for over a year. That car sees little mileage and looks great. My daily Driver has EXO v2 and has had 20K put on the clock. The coating has been on 9 months, this car sits outside 24x7 and looks great and beads great. I am in love with this stuff.
I opti-coated my wifes car and my sons. Opticoat is very durable, does not mar easily but also does not bead as well. If you are after protection it s clear winner. Both coatings make washing very easy. I want to try either GTECH C1 or Cquartz on a truck I keep for really bad weather. I will report back. If you wash your own car EXO is awesome, if you have a black car or don't wash your own car, go Opticoat for longer lasting results IMHO. |
