Dealership Doesn't Know the Answer, Do You?
 

Hey,

Well I went to the parts department and asked about my steering wheel, as the little screens which display (sport, sport plus, and launch control) seem to be damaged or fading (screens are not clear basically).

Can the silver trim be replaced by itself? Trim including the screens that is ;)

Parts guy didn't know the answer :(

From the parts information available, it does not appear to be very servicable.
Looks like the center air bag cover in Car. Red is Part# 997 803 089 12 N14 and lists for $1083.24. The steering wheel has three separate components listed. The entire Steering wheel (various part# based on style and various prices), the center section as a module, and the bolt. No other parts or pieces shown and these all vary by yoru car with different part numbers and colors. Don't get hung up on the image...same image used for all styles.

So from what I can tell, just the button section would not be separate.

If it looks faded this was a known issue amid fixed under warranty.

Mine was replaced under warranty with a full new wheel.

I dont mind replacing the entire trim if it contains the screens. But yeah thats the image i got when i put my vin number, thought i would see my actual steering wheel displayed. Thats when the parts guy said "im not sure about ur steering wheel", suggested i buy the entire wheel. I didnt like his suggestion!

My was also foggy and was told to the whole steering wheel has to be replace. I had to ask many times to get warranty replacement.

When I bought my used 2010 Turbo Cab about a week after I bought the car I was called that they new wheel was in and I needed to drop off the car. It was done under warranty, the dealer replaced the wheel because the screen became hazed and this was a problem they fixed for dozens of cars. You need to go to your local dealer and have them replace your wheel under warranty.

But i don't have warranty :(

If you have a good relationship with your dealer they might help you out, it is a known flaw with the SportDesign steering wheel.

Is the replacement "more of the same" or have they fixed the issue?

For some reason the piece you're talking about (and that is shown in the pics below) does not show up in any published PET diagrams from Porsche. On the sport wheel it's a trim piece that can be installed and removed without removing the wheel. The hub shown above in this thread is not what we have in our cars. I have attached a couple of pics that I resized. When I zoom in on the pic from behind I'm pretty sure the film (part that gets foggy) is attached, and it does not look like you can replace it. I got these from DB Carbon while trying to decide if I wanted to trade out the trim piece for a CF version--I do.

I think this is the answer--that you cannot just replace the clear film, but you have to replace the trim piece, but, what do I know?

What's weird is that I was not able to find one pic of the metal trim separate off the steering wheel. I don't mind replacing the entire metal trim if it contains new screens for display. I'm also surprised that not a single member has changed this trim before hehehe ;)

Does anyone know a porsche parts expert to answer this?!

I know members have changed it, at least some that have gone to the CF version. I sent an email to Daniel at DBCarbon about the film--whether or not it comes attached to this trim piece. My guess is that (1) if it's attached to the trim piece --part number still a mystery-- then you can replace the trim piece, or (2) it is NOT attached to the trim piece, and would explain why wheels seem to be getting replaced under warranty.

I will chime in later when I get a response. I spent a good amount of time a few weeks back trying to find a part number for this thing. I will let you know what I hear back.
