What's up with the 997TT shifter?
I am coming directly from a 996TT and a 996GT2 into a pretty immaculate 997TT with only 16k miles. That said, I am a little disappointed in the shifter feel as it feels like a very delicate plastic throw if that is a way to describe it. Both of my 996's felt like a bolt action rifle in that the shifts, while notchy, were very direct and felt mechanical and made of metal. This one just feels, well, fragile. Any light on what the issue is and how to resolve it would be helpful.

No idea what you refer to. Had 997s with and without the SSK. Both can rammed or slipped into gear. Get the SSK. It will cure your ills.
|
No idea what you are talking about. My 997t has the factory added short shifter and it feels great. My 996 turbo felt like a turd.
|
I will look into the SSK but I am not sure if it cures the feel of the shifting action. When I change gears the overall feel of shifting just feel I am pulling a plastic lever through some plastic resistance. My 996's felt like metal; very mechanical. You could actually hear the rods clanking when you moved the lever around in neutral. Only way I can describe it.

The stock shifter is plastic. Perhaps your 996 had something non-stock? I've been super happy with the Numeric Racing shifter in my 997.1TT. It provides that rifle-bolt type of feel and precision, but is pretty spendy.

Felt the same way about the 997tt when I got mine with the stock shifter.
Everything got cured with a EVOMS short shift kit and the BILLET SHIFT linkage. Feels like youre rowing an entirely different car (in a good way), and shocked that this is not how it came stock in the first place. |
When I was test driving 997tt's my first expereance was the stock shifter and I felt the same way. Very sluggish, cheap, plastic feel. I eventually test drove the factory SSK and bought that car.

+1 for dpert1. Only difference is that I bought it with the stock shifter and put in a factory ssk later. Very happy with it.

agree with OP....... for 150k there are really some things that make you scratch your head...
I just sold my Aston Martin,,, and when I picked up the 09 TT my first impressions where "wow - what a cheapish feeling car" Now when I hit the boost in 2nd, 3rd, 4th my eyes opened up and said - "ehhh - who cars about cheep feeling - that was fun" BTW - my car is getting the SSK installed now, and I will add a nicer shifter as well ... |

My guess would be that the linkage needs to be adjusted - these are cable linkages after all. I had issues with my SSK and had it adjusted and it feels great now.

I will look into a short shift option but my 996 felt like a much rawer car. Granted, my car had a different suspension and an exhaust (I will address the exhaust shortly) so there is a difference there but the shifter and overall refined nature of the 997 make it feel less dramatic and more comfy GT car. The cheap parts on the interior are not worth mentioning as the interior, while cheap, is far better than the 996.
