Rix 997.1 Turbo Project 121

Awesome thread, Rix. I don't know what you do for a living but if you pay as much attention to detail at work as you do for this build then you would be the best employee EVER!
#152
Always. I didn't pay much attention to this - that's why it took so long

Thanks guys. I'm going to add a few sensors, do something with the exhaust to try and quiet it down a bit, and a few other things here in the next couple of weeks. It hasn't really been on the dyno in anger yet, so hoping to get a couple of angry pulls to see where it's at as well. Then I'll be racing at Texas Invitational on October 7/8, I should get some 60-130 and lots of video as well.

honestly I don't remember because it was so long ago. I believe its the 3psi.

rix- what is your exhaust setup now? mine isn't very loud.. at least, in my mind. I feel a little sheepish when I drive it to work @ 7am, but its not horrible. Ive been pulled over plenty of times (no tickets!) and no complaints about the exhaust, just me driving like an ******* in general

I just got the trailer today.

Say you're running 30psi and the wastegates are mostly shut. Air is flowing through your turbine, then out the exhaust. A tiny amount of air may be flowing through the wastegate. If you're running 15psi, the wastegates are partially open bypassing air away from the turbine. Eventually you'll hit a point where you can't run any lower boost, due to the wastegate not being able to flow enough to divert away from the turbine.
In the past your usual OEM internally gated turbine housing didn't have a very big internal gate, and the setup was more of a compromise from the start, although that is changing now that turbocharging is becoming 'socially acceptable' again in the car market.
The TiAL internally gated housings are designed with much larger internal gates than are typical, and use a novel (patented I believe?) design that swirls air around the outside of the air that is coming through the turbine which raises turbine efficiency. If you talk to the designers of the parts they will tell you the setup actually works better than a traditional external wastegate setup. I'm not really qualified to give an engineering dissertation on it, but it sure works well on my car which was enough to convince me.
