Recommended oil for our cars is

Mobil 1 5W-40 or 5W-50 European Formula.

But I cannot find that in any store. Not even the specialist import stores.

How do you top off between changes? Or change your own oil?

Do i need to learn a secret handshake or something?

 

I've never had a problem finding Mobil 1 at AutoZone or WalMart.

 

Just any Mobil 1,.. or the ones recommended for the car?

I went to 2 autoparts chains, Walmart, some Foreign auto parts places and even called the 2 local Porsche dealers. No dice.

The only recommended oils are

0W-40 European Formula (IF you're going to be starting the engine BELOW -15F)
5W-40 European Formula
5W-50 European Formula

Needs to meet A40 specification.

The only one I can find is the 0W-40,.. which has the least protection of the three of course, and will have the shortest life.

Even the local dealers doesn't have the correct oil. They just put the winter oil in everything and hope no one ever drives their car hard.

I just bought a few jugs of Total 9000 in 5W-40 in case I don't find anything else in the meantime.

i'm in honolulu & find mobil 1 A-40 approved in either 5-40 or 5-50 at any Napa store- bought last month for 5.79 qt. Other option is amazon for mobil 1 5-50

 

Wallmart carries the European Formula. You can also order from Amazon Prime

 

I tried Walmart. No dice.

Also looked on Amazon,... they don't have it either. Just the 0W-40,.. which is what you use if you plan to start the car in temps below NEG 15 F.

You want 5W-40 or 5W-50 otherwise.

 

I get 5L jugs of Motul 5W-40 on Amazon, Prime shipping even. Obviously the Mobil 1 vs Motul vs XXX has been done to death a million times but it's A40 certified and works for me.

 

That's what I wish I'd bought.

I picked up some Total 9000 5W-40 for this time around. It is A40 certified. I noticed at my local shop that they have been using Motul 8100 X-Power in 5W-40.

That's what I'll use next time around.

Is that the same one you are using ?

I've been using 8100 X-cess 5W-40. It's been a while since I researched it and made that my oil of choice, but my research at the time indicated it was the one to go with. (Keeping in mind that all of the "good" oils will have their advocates - it's hard to truly go wrong.)

But you can back-door by looking up individual products on Google,.. and get to individual pages on their site that way.

The Power only comes in 10W-60 from what I can find.

The other main 2 are the clean and the cess

X-Clean has an HTHS of 3.6,..... with a nod to diesel particulate filters

the X-cess has an HTHS of 3.7,.. for high power to displacement engines

Both are A40 rated.

So it looks like the X-Cess is the way to go (In the Motul line).

Total doesn't give the specs on their tech data sheets,.. or on the bottle. But their application chart states that all 9000 oils are equal or greater than 3.5 HTHS

I'll use up this Total,. then the Motul X-cess next time around.

I use Liqui Moly 5W-40 that I purchase from Amazon. It's approved and I like it better than Mobil 1 or Motul.

 

Walmart in my area has the BEST pricing.

 

Unfortunately,.. the ones my me only carry the Winter weight 0W-40 oil (0W40).
