2007 Turbo Tip or 2015 Boxster GTS 6MT?

Hello Everybody,

A newbie here; joined for some advice on the purchase dilemma as outlined in the title. The GTS is pristine with 3000 mi. The 997 is in great shape but has 46,000 mi, and is a Tiptronic. Any reliability issues with the 911? Any maintenance/mechanical issues or Service Bulletins for that year Turbo I should be ready for? Thanks in advance!

Basic questions...do you want a Manual or auto (tip) or PDK? Do you prefer driving turbo cars or NA? Are you OK with the idea of a >10 year old Porsche with some miles that's out of warranty?

I prefer a manual trans, no doubt. The lack of warranty is why I am looking for any common mechanical issues on the Turbo. Turbo, NA or FI really doesn't matter. I currently run a 2010 M3 and that V8 is a 8300 RPM redline hoot that has eight throttle bodies, one for each cylinder. It's a blast from 6ooo on up. Have had Boxsters and 3 series and the fuelie systems in those motors were great too. 911 turbo has always been on my wish list.

Coming from a E90 M3 to a 997.1 Turbo, i would advise to wait until you can find/afford what you want. A 997.1 Turbo Tiptronic will be a HUGE letdown to the visceral feel and response that you're used to in the E9x M3.

Boxster is a great car, and the 6MT is fun, but the turbo is exciting to drive. Exhaust and tune really deliver outstanding performance that the boxster cannot match. I find the tiptronic fun to drive in sport mode and manual as well as being an asset in traffic.

I think both cars are great, but it sounds like you want a proper 6MT sports car. Given this choice, I would get the Boxster. Given more time, I’d wait for the right 911 to come along, probably a 991.

sounds like between the two should be a boxster as you like a "drivers" car

Don't be lured into a Turbo just cause its a turbo

If you want a turbo , do it right and buy a clean coupe 6speed - You won't regret it. best car on the planet - period

Boxster GTS is $70-80k, no? For that money you should be able to get a clean 997.1TT manual with low mileage <30k miles. Wait a little longer and it will come around.

Get the Turbo now

What is this WAIT stuff. Get the Turbo now and enjoy it. You will. Then down the road if the Tip is not for you, sell it and get what you want. But don’t wait because others think the TIP is no good. That transmission is still a lot of fun in the Turbo. Remember it’s faster than the manual by a significant margin. So buy the Turbo now and enjoy life.
