He wants it to sound mean....
My dad is looking for an exhaust upgrade to make his new C4s sound sweet. His good friend has a maserati gransport which sounds great and he wants something like that. What exhaust upgrade should he get that will make it louder without breaking the bank? I assume a full exhaust system isn't necessary but only certain parts if possible.
The Maserati shares it's motor with Ferrari. Your dad will be hard pressed to make his C4S sound as distinct as the Maserati. However there are several options for great sounding Porsche exhausts. I am sure if you search the forum you will find many discussions regarding this topic.
Just an FYI, AWE exhausts (with the exception of their straight pipes) have been known to be on the quiter side.
Precisely. You're never going to get that "Ferrari" sound out of a Porsche. As Fabryce says, "the old man would turn over in his grave if that ever happened." Love it or hate it, each produce their own unique sound. I personaly love it! If you want loud but cheap, by pass pipes are the only way to go but there will be a fair amount more in cabin resonance/drone so just be prepared for that. Also the sound will be loud but no where near as pretty as your grand sport if thats what your looking for.
If you wanna spend a little more and get a more refined sound that wont be as loud, there are several companies out there can help you out, Cargraphic, FVD, AWE, etc... Unfortunately to get that higher pitched mechanical sound (without buying a 7 GT3 with muffler by-pass pipes) you'd need to employ some sort of custom cross over design close to that of the Cup system.
Here's an idea of what the dry revs will sound like with by pass pipes...

And a rough idea what it will sound like under load...

I had the Europipes Sport System installed in my 997S. Sounds mean and louder without any drone, its great.

I was going to say Europipe too . I personally prefer the shrill rasp sound of Tubi but for the mean sound he may like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWFoOSslMCU
