New Mod: Black Hood
New Mod: Black Hood
When I decided to get my clear back, I only got the half hood, BAD IDEA.
At the track, especially tailing a car I have been getting chips, and I hate hips.
Thaks to Don, I decided to do my hood in black.
Im not done but this is how it looks so far....
I LOVE IT!

BTW the line in the middle is from the clear bra underneath.
I did it myself, pretty easy except I messed up on the emblem, but hopefully once it heats up it will shrink and not be noticeable... or I will have to do it again!

no the chips are not even noticeable to anyone else.
This will do until I get tired, then i will peel it off and maybe do it again.
It looks so much more aggressive with the black on the hood

I like it- tastefully done. Thanks for sharing a good alternate solution. I think the color of your car really makes it work- how about some matching black mirrors and wing?
What exactly did you use? That spray on/peel off protector like that stuff they sell at Griot's (I think)? I'm always afraid that it will spray on and not come off.

I have wondered how my Targa would look with a black hood, since the roof is basically black too. Curious what mobonic used to make the change.

The vinyl is a matte black. I got it from forum member Don Nguyen.
He gave me a great deal.
I did it myself and needed another person for the job, but all my friends were busy and I was anxious!
It was pretty straight forward.
The hardest part was peeling of the backing, and trying not to get any particles on the sticky side and not let it stick to its-self.
Steps:
1. Wash Hood
2. Clay Bar Hood
3. Spray down hood with spray bottle filled with water and a cap-full of dishwasher soap.
4. Unpeel backing and spray down sticky side with solution
5. Align on hood
6. Squeegee out excess water (tricky part)
7. Let dry a bit
8. Cut down edges
The only place I messed up was the emblem, a side tour when I was cutting it. I will have to see how it comes out when it dries (is supposed to shrink a bit in the sun in the next few days)
Wait and bake in sun, heat is your friend.
I will take more pics when Im done tomorrow and after I wash the car.
If you can see in the pic, the vinyl was not wide enough to fit the widest part of the top of the hood, so I had to cut pieces to fit.
I will see how it comes out.
Not a bad mod for under $100 ...... my clear bra gut wanted $600!

Any reason you didn't remove the clear bra before you installed the black? I assume you weren't sure if your install would work out or not, so left the clear bra there in case you needed it again, although I would have removed it and been prepared to have the whole hood re-done if your black didn't turn out.
Any chance you can bring the car to Cars & Coffee to show it off? I'll be there tomorrow, but not next week.
