PCM failure on 997.2

Yesterday while driving home from a relaxing day at the beach, my PCM decided to quit working and it reboots itself every 5 minutes. No access to NAV, tuner, iPod or CD changer and the screen was stuck in German langue. I stopped the car along the freeway 5, turned off the engine, waited for a few minutes and I started the car again in hope that the electronic glitches will go away but it didnt help. This morning, I dropped the car off at the dealership and my SA was speechless after seeing the PCM symptoms...

Anyone else here experience the same issue?

Since the PCM's are computers these days, it sure looks like a computer part failure. Memory, chipset, loose connector, or more likely, a hard disk failure. The PCM3 is an embedded system.. in effect a computer system like your desktop but highly tuned and specialized, but a computer non-the-less.

My guess is a new hard drive and its all ok.

It`s funny - the very first thing I have thought about as soon as I heard of 'great new navigation system' on PCM 3 which is based on HDD instead of DVD drive - for how long will that HDD survive in constantly shaking 911 car.
I have similar doubts about Mobridge unit now since I learned it also does have HDD inside.

Would be better if they used a solid state drive. I haven't read much feedback on the new Nav, touch screen PCM. Is it all that or are people having issues with it similar to Jmane55 but just not posting about it?

JMan,

I had a similar occurrence today, but the unit eventually started working.

Drove for about 40 minutes this morning, stopped for about 10 minutes; when I came back out and restarted the car... nothing. No NAV, no tuner, no ipod, no CD.

Got to my next destination, shut off the car. Returned to the car 7 hours later and everything worked when I started the car back up.

Let us know how it turns out with yours. Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Mike

My NAV got stuck on "calculating route". Porsche had to replace the DVD unit.
