My driver's mirror whistles over 50mph?
I'm assuming its the mirror b/c the whisteling is coming from the front of the driver's window. Could be the window as well I suppose. The noise doesn't come and go. It's always there, although it seems louder when its windy out.
Its a 997.2 with only 1700 miles on it. At first I just asssumed that was normal, but the more I think about it, why should any modern car have a window or side mirror that whistles in the wind?? Is this normal? has anyone experienced this and then had it fixed? Thanks, David |
The mirror will always cause some sound at speed, as it disturbs the airflow. I do not know about a whistle specifically. You can always tape all gaps if indeed there is a whistle.

Had the same whistle on the passenger side at speeds above 50mph. The dealer fixed it under warranty by taking the mirror apart and sealing the bottom half the of mirror with silicone seal on the inside (noise is due to wind going over the gap between the top and bottom part of the sideview mirror). It's a known issue so your dealer should be able to fix under warranty. Noise was completely gone after the fix.

But if it is known (Service Bulletin?) why is not sealed from the factory on new cars?

The mirror connects to the A-pillar with a top cross piece and lower cross piece, there by creating a small triangular opening/gap. When I cover the opening the whistle seems to disappear. What exactly is the dealer sealing??

No manufacturer ever "offers up' service bulletins. They wait for the customer to find out on their own. Doesn't seem fair.

Mine does it on the passenger side mirror. Can only really hear it with the top down. Been to lazy to bring it to the dealer... 45min drive...

TSB's or Technical Service Bulletins are offered up by manufacturers on a regular basis.....sometimes after several customers have a documented complaint, but often before anyone is aware a potential problem exists. |
that happens to me too, glad somebody brought it up, will have the dealer look at it and hopefully fix it... so many damn noises, rattles, and squeaks, specially in the cab

Maybe they offer it up to the service department but have you ever had one mailed to your home? Maybe Porsche is different, it is my first one. But I have owned several Mercs and Bimmers and had many TSB bulletins honored but always found out thru various forums or on my own. Never have either manufacturer contacted me regarding them. Only one form Lexus contacted me and it was in regards to an emissions issue.
Usually though I have found out when I took my car in for regularly scheduled maintenance and the service advisor has filled me in. I've owned 9 BMW's and 4 Porsches so perhaps I've just had more TSB's with my cars than you have with yours..........or maybe my service centers are better? |
