Maybe he's just not really *that* into cars. Gotta a lot else going on to keep him busy. Probably just walked in to one of the Hollywood Porsche dealerships several year back, wrote a check for a car he perceived as a "nice ride" and never looked back.
Now if he spent all of his spare time on forums he would certainly know better.

may be he doesn't want to be bothered by people while he's going about day to day & blending in is what he wants.

He undoubtedly has a few great cars and the 996 is not a bad car. Some people get attached to their cars and don't keep upgrading to the next newer and better model.

Poor Marky Mark. Remember that used to be his name when he was a rapper. 
He was mostly known for dropping his pants. 
It looks like a 996 C2. I guess he hasn't had a hit movie in a while so he's "slumming it". Now I don't feel so bad for getting the base model myself. 
When I was doing my initial research on Porsche I came across a photo of Ashley Tisdale. She's a young actress (22 or 23) on the Disney Channel and stars in those "High School Musical" movies all the kids are into these days. I noticed Ashley had a Boxster S and said to myself geez, if that little girl drives a Boxster S then I have to get a 911.

Maybe some people like the marque, like the way the car drives, but doesn't need to be seen in the newest. Friend of mine was a millionaire many times over, loved Porsches. Would buy one he liked, drive it until the wheels fell off, then buy another.
