Should I or Shouldn't I.....
 

I have an opportunity, and I'm not sure if it's worth it so thought i'd get some input from the community to at least give me a reality check

I have a 2006 C4S, I've had it for a while and have racked up a bit over 48,000 miles and love my car. I have an opportunity to change my car through a deal that has a buyer for my car and i'm able to pick up a friends car which is for sale

The skinny is the total cost to go from one to the other is about $15k (CDN),,,,,my question is......is it worth it?? I really wasn't planning on changing for a couple more years, pretty happy with my car. Here's a quick breakdown of the two cars in question;

My car:

2006 C4S (Artic Silver)
48,000 miles

No more warranty (expired a month ago)


New car

2007 C4S (Black)
16,000 Miles

Thoughts? Suggestions? Slaps across the head??

I'm usually not the most clever when it comes to pricing/valuation/etc., but this seems like a bad idea. $15K for one year newer. Yes, the new one does have some of the warranty left, but that's an annualized rate of $10K for coverage. The mileage difference is non-trivial, but if you've taken good care of yours, I'd just keep going and save the $15K for repairs. That would be a lot of repairs.

Plus the mods you've done to your '06. Assuming you were happy with them would you plan on doing the same mods to the new car? If so, the difference in price just went up.

Perhaps 12k instead...
Low mileage and more warranty are tempting bit that doesn't mean necessarily that the car is better. Ask yourself how long you intent to keep your p car. IMHO of you want to keep your 06 for less than 18 months it might not be worth it. The dfi cars are quite different, why don't wait a little and get a low mileage 09?

Might be worth it for an '09. That $15 definitely would cover a lot of repairs. Plus the devil you know...
If you were going to a cab or going to a 4S from a 2S that might be different. Doesn't seem worth it to me at all.

I checked on an '09's but the delta would be over 20k (canadian prices are always higher)

If i keep my current C4S, i'll be keeping it for another 2 years at the very least and will probably do another 30,000 miles in those two years as well. That was my original plan, keep it for a couple more years and get a 2010 or 2011

I just don't know if this is worth 15k (CDN) in the end

-lower mileage
-warranty
-resale in two years (if i sell my car 06 w/90,000 miles vs the 07 w/46,000 miles)

btw, forgot to mention in this whole transaction that none of my mods go with my car, all the original stuff would go back on and i can keep/sell them

Sounds like you know what to do.

With regard to your last comment, if it were me, I would hold on to the car for another 2 years and get yourself in a new 2010 or redesigned (?) 2011. The new cars with DFI and 3.8, bluetooth, etc. would be worth the wait.

Keep your car, if you are getting a 997.2, then spend the money. In two years there will be a $5000 difference, not worth it IMO!

I would not hold the car past 50K miles unless you planned to drive it into the ground. I've said many times that the first depreciation hit is when the car crosses 10K miles but the biggest depreciation happens when it passes 50K. Not just with Porsches.. but ALL cars .

I am not sure what the CDN exhance rate it or the market value of the two cars in that region amounts to .

Use your best judgement .. good luck either way.

That's a tough decision considering how many miles you put on the car... in 2 years, your '06 with 80K miles may not be "worth" 15K less than the 07 with 45K miles but you may have a pretty tough time finding a buyer for it. I think most people would agree that right now, on the retail side, the '07 w/16K miles would cost more than $10K (perhaps $15K) over the OP's '06 w/45K miles-

There is very little appreciable difference between the 2 cars, JP. Keep the one you've got. Makes no sense to trade away $15k for the same car, and as soon as you're in the other one, you'd agree, because you'd be down $15k, and in basically the same car.

how much $ does it cost you to register the 07 if you decided to get it? Would you have to pay the GST on it (5% tax on the purchase price), plus all the other fees and charges? The GST on a $60k car is $3,000
That is one of the issues you would have to factor in, the costs involved when registering and insuring the new vehicle.

Both private sales (no GST), 15k includes everything (it's actually $14,996), it's essentially the 'Money in Fist' number to complete the whole transaction

That's kind of where i'm leaning. This came out of the blue.

My buddy is moving to the UK, wants to sell me his car and actually came up with a buyer for mine (his brother) There always the chance if i was serious I could negotiate the delta down.

The only real thing that intrigued me was the mileage/resale in two years. The lack of warranty on mine doesn't bother me at all

The question is will the '07 be worth 15k more than my '06 in two years when I trade my car in.

Tough call... it's hard to value any late model P-car with 80-90K miles- and probably not easy to find buyers unless it's pretty well discounted-
