Clutch issue? Not sure what to do.
Went on a fathers day drive to the beach today. Car seemed fine for the 50 minute freeway drive to get to the hills. Then as j was taking off from a light about to head into the hills the clutch felt very soft. I also got some chatter.
We were clse to our destination so I carried on. My friend was there who has almost the same car. We checked and the hydraulic fluid is low. There isn't any dealrships open that can sell me some fluid. I'm hoping the fluid is the issue. Can any give me some suggestions on what type of fluid I need?

Are you sure about this? Never heard such a thing...
As per the manual 30-01-07 (bleeding the clutch) the clutch system uses the brake reservoir for the clutch operation.......You normally won't have a soft clutch pedal on the track as the fluid in the clutch system doesn't get hot enough....Brakes are another matter.....

Well, I dropped it off at the dealer this morning and they just called and said the clutch it toast. That seems crazy to me. I mean, I never smelt anything and it didn't seem to slip to me either. Unless I just didn't realize it was slipping.
Car has 32k on it, although I bought it with 26k.

I'm sorry to hear that, I was suspecting the clutch was gone. It happened to my cousin as well (he owns a 997). In 32k miles, it is acceptable... The clutch is expensive to replace none the less
$1900.00 baby.... now I'm in the doghouse with the wife...
"I knew we shouldn't have bought that damn car.... we should have bought a rental property instead!"
Although, she's the first to say "we're taking the porsche right!" whever we go somewhere.

No, they hadn't opened it up yet. When I say low I mean that there was some still on the stick so it wasn't that low. I was just hoping it was low enough to be the cause of my issue. Now that I've accepted the truth I can honestly say that there were symptoms. Nothing major like when I've had clutches go out in the past but little things that at the time struck me as strange and then it seemed fine so I figured it was in my head. Slight chattering here and there, a slip while getting on the freeway here and there. Little enough to make convincing myself that it was fine possible. This is my first porsche so "knowing" what I'm feeling gets confusing some times. It has so much power compared to anything I've ever driven that a slight slip is still more than I'm used to. I also drive pretty conservatively as well.
Thanks for the update on that......Yeah it's always nice when we find a simple inexpensive solution!!
Sorry to hear your clutch has gone. In all fairness $1900.00 isn't too bad for a clutch job on a 911....
You may be able to do a bit better at an independent shop....

No, I don't. I didn't replace the clutch so I didn't want to spend so much money on labor...
I want to spend my money on seats/roll bar/harness & wheels/tires next
