On the 996 you just pull it straight up and it pops off. Mine didnt have a screw anywhere. This might help.. http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Por...-Sport-Shifter then click on the installation instructions at the bottom

I wouldn't think it would be any different than the 997.1 knob and in that case you need to pull it strait off as said above. It takes a lot of force to get it off. It is best to put it in 2nd or fourth and pull at an angle away from the front windshield. I think I even stood in the back seat to give myself added leverage. It feels like it is bolted on, but it's not.

Whoa there hurc!

You don't just pull it off. At the base of the shift knob, where the loose leather starts, there is a locking ring that needs to be twisted a quarter turn. It does take some force and I suggest you wrap a wrench or pair of channel locks in a light towel and use that to twist the ring.

Once the ring is twisted, pull hard on the knob. It might feel like it will never budge but you do need to put 'a little' tug into it.

People have broken the windshield when it finally let loose so be careful not to make that expensive error.

G'luck!

It's been a long time since I had to remove it, but I guess I forgot to mention a small piece of critical information, YES, the locking ring, don't forget the locking ring. :D

It is actually easier if you pull up the shifter boot to expose the locking ring.
