It is just another case of the Australian government implementing one of its "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" socialist policies.

I am an economist at UNSW and we have shown that in Australia the effective tax rate is 70% - income tax, GST, import duties, sales taxes etc all accumulated together - which goes to pay for Public Health Care, Unemployment insurance (more like unemployment permission) and an overcomplicated Bureacratic Government whose sole job is the imposition of regulations, not the provision of opportunities as it should be.

Take heed America, this is where your Government is taking you. It happened to Europe, it happened to us and it will happen to YOU! <insert spooky music>

The whole luxury car tax regime is absolutely abhorrent! There is NOTHING that warrants that sort of tax. I mean, there is no such thing as Luxury Home Tax, Luxury Boat Tax, Luxury Jewellery Tax... Just for cars only. It's HARDLY an equitable system of taxation for it targets only a SMALL group of people who have a preference for nice cars.

You work hard, pay your taxes, then with that money (already taxed) you buy something you love and pay tax again and again!

To me, it's a tax set up by the retards by both the left and right, but probably more so the right. Why? Because it makes those kind of cars only available to the VERY wealthy (who seem to get away with paying very little tax somehow!)

Here are the facts:

A car is subject to Luxury Car Tax (LCT) if it's value exceeds $57,000 AUD. Which is just peanuts. My other car, a VW Golf R32 cost $60,000 AUD and that too was subject to LCT (albeit a small bit).

The Government (labor LEFT) in 2008, upped the LCT rate from 25% to 33%. It's freaking ridiculous.

For my C2 997.2, in total cost me $220,000 AUD. Of that total the tax I paid was as follows:

$ 27.00 = Registration transfer tax
$ 15,840.10 = Goods and Services Tax (Value added tax)
$ 35,121.00 = Luxury Car Tax
$ 9,570.00 = Stamp Duty (State government tax)

Total of $60,558.10 in taxes for which the govt provides me F*** all with other than S*** roads and speed cameras in order to try to take more money from me.

*sigh* That felt better... </rant>
Sooooooo Sorry, but I won't contribute too much. Same $hit here in the states and getting worse.

Whats worse, is many of the tax laws are just to control peoples actions; not for revenue.

I hear you on the LCT. I have several good friends who've all paid through the nose; in some cases the tax paid on the vehicle exceeded the vehicle's MSRP in the US.

I've got more time on the roads in Vic than in NSW, but I gotta say - I thought the roads pretty much anywhere but the extreme bush were really, really good, but I'm dealing with broke-*** California.

Hmmm! I only noticed it after you mentioned it. It was still being prepped and put together for the upcoming motor show, but I just got word from PCAu and they said that they have finished detailing it. I'll have another peek tomorrow morning and this time I'll bring the SLR (Canon, not Mercedes )

I thought about trading up to the GT2RS....for about 5 seconds. My 2008 GT2 (<3,800 km) plus 300K. Ditto, Oz Tax system sucks
