Buying Used 997 -- Wheels and Ipod question

Howdy

I am thinking about buying a used 997 Carrera S, but I want to put new wheels on it.

1.) Can I put turbo wheels on it like this? http://www.jeremycopp.org/blogs/?p=7

2.) If so, are the repicas OK or a bad move?

3.) I live in a city and therefore can't have huge wheels sent to me.. what kind of shop will put the wheels on for me? Are most shops buttheads and will not allow me to order the parts from a 3rd party?

4.) Is there a way I can get an ipod female jack installed in the glove box? I have this on my BMW and its all I prefer. I dont want to hook up some complicated interface.

Those are turbo wheels. Many here have them on their NA cars. You should be able to work with a tire shop to have them received and then mounted, maybe even swapping tires, etc. Replicas are a very bad idea, but there are many aftermarket wheel choices that are very good and affordable.

Re the iPod, it makes a big difference if you have a 997.1 or 997.2. That is, are you looking at a 2005-2008 car, or 2009+?

Hey
Thanks for your response.

So a regular tire shop can do it for me?

If you were to do it how would you do it?

Re the Ipod port: the car is a 2005 carrera S

What is the diff between aftermarket and replica? I'd prefer to get some affordable ones as switching the wheels out on this bad boy is an additional cost to me..

Replicas are copies of Porsche designs. Aftermarket are original designs, and sometimes copies of other aftermarket designs. I don't know of any legitimate replica wheels, except for some expensive choices for classic designs, like Kinesis Super Cup, or maybe RH, and there might be a choice or two for Fuchs copies, with custom sizing, etc, which are all premium quality and premium price. Everything else is crap, AFAIK.
IMHO, the majority of aftermarket wheels for Porsches are good, but you can still find some crap out there. I have OZ Ultraleggerras from Tire Rack and they are (again IMHO, as wheels are very subjective) are very attractive, reasonably priced, and of high quality.

For the iPod, I have a 06, which would be similar to yours and I went with an aftermarket (Kenwood) head unit. There are cheaper options out there, but I'm not the expert on that. Try a search for that info.

Good luck

Thank you.

Well is there a chain of places like TiresPlus that I can go to in the minneapolis area and they can just order up some new wheels for me?

I either want turbo ones or some like these:

or these:

1) I would not place replicas . They are oftencheaply made and the center can crack . On a car like this safety is most important above savings or style.

In contrast the actual 997 Turbo wheels are very well made as thy are forged wheras other 997.1 wheels OEM whrels are cast.
I didn't like my Turbo wheels styling and took them off my Turbo . (felt they looked corvette ish).

My favorite wheels are Hte or Champion . Both are excellent .

2) My ipod jack is in the center console . I have no idea if it can be placed on the glovebox .

Both of those, and the turbos are all OEM. You should be able to buy a set of your choice for $800-1200. That would be your least expensive and highest quality way to go. High end aftermarket wheels can be up to 3-5x that amount.

Regarding those chain stores you mention, I really don't trust them. Maybe to get a deal on some tires, but not for wheels. However, I really don't have any experience with them. I would buy the wheels used if you want OEM, or new from tire rack or another sponsor here. Get them shipped to a tire place that you trust or you've been referred to. Talk to them about it first, before shipping there.

Btw - what wheels are coming with the car?

Check eBay for OEM Porsche wheels, you may even be able to find a nice set with tires. Stay away from replicas.

Based on your questions, it sounds to me like you would benefit from doing some more extensive research on this forum. It is no big deal to get different wheels. Many are advertised on the classifieds here regularly, both Porsche and good after-market wheels such as HRE, DPE, and Champion. Also, most tire shops are pretty good handling expensive wheels these days, as so many cars now have them. I would ask other Porsche owners in your area who they use, just to be sure.
Turbo wheels have less offset on rears, so the rears will stick out further on your car, but many people do this and like the look
For iPod, you can install a device such as Dension Gateway that does a good job. There is lots of info about all this stuff if you do a search.
I wouldn't rush to make changes. These cars are great as is, and giving yourself more time, and knowledge, would allow you to make the best choices. Good luck.

Regarding ipod: if you get the right exhaust in place you will forget about music all together while driving your 997S. Your foot will play the tunes.

if saving money is what you're after, perhaps a 100,000$+ car is not for you?

don't do reps. Go OEM or aftermarket either through a reputable dealer (don't know any) or through the dealership itself.
I personally prefer OEM because aftermarkets don't look as nice.. but that's just me.
Replicas are usually cast and will crack or break.. I've seen it happen too many times when I used to hang in the modder community with very ugly aftermaths.
Spend more now and save a lot later.
If you go cheap you end up paying more on the long run.

While you are at it, why not get a replica Porsche also. I am sure you can get a replica body and use a fiero chassis for it. Well, those chassis support ferrari replica bodies.
