My dealer switched me to Mobile 1 5W/40W about a year ago.

Wonder where he's buying 5/40 Mobile 1 unless it's the kind for diesel engines. I thought the 5/40 was only available in Europe.

No I actually bought Mobil 05/40 synthetic today at Pep boys. $8.29

for street car in cold winter stay with 0w40, for summer - 5w50, mobile 1. they are both approved by manufacturer.

those who track car a lot use 15w50 as engine runs much hotter on a track. street car does not need it.

Curious, does it have the A40 approval on it and say anything about made to the specs of Benz, Volkwagen or Porsche? Or 'european formula'?
If Mobil 1 5/40 is now here in the States I think I would switch to it.

Why switch - problems or just a need to try something different?

The aforementioned info is certainly correct. If you look at the underside of the rear hood/engine cover you'll see a mobile 1 sticker with the details from the factory.

I am, as is the OP, located in CA so we don't really have winter per sé. I just stick with the 5w/40w all year.
