You will definitely want to use the search function for this one. Many many threads on exhausts. From what I've seen, Tubi, Cargraphic, AWE seem to percolate up to the top in most threads, and the cheapest option by far is a homemade hack called the "Gundo hack" because a forum member Gundo came up with it. It amounts to $75 worth of welding by a muffler shop to weld a short piece of pipe between the two outlet pipes so that some exhaust gas bypasses the muffler. Ends up sounded much like the Porsche Sport exhaust. I have it and love it.

i have the pse and have disconnected the switch in the engine bay so that pse is 'on' all the time, and is a bit louder as well, something to do with german noise laws, if you have this and would like to try, maybe i can look up the earlier thread that has a pic of the switch...it is TOO easy and sounds awesome, awesome...good luck

Consider CATS and call it a day. You get both power and sounds. Sounds are subjective and it's hard to recommend one type of muffler over another. Power on the other hand is unanimous, and everyone agrees the CATS make noticeable HP.

I had the "PSE" hack on my 996, similar to the Gundo hack and was very happy with it. You can adjust the loudness with the size of the pipe being welded in. With the hack I used it went from the cap at the top of the muffler to the outlet pipe, thereby bypassing a level on the muffler. Also, look into the K&N air intake, it lets more air into the engine and helps it breath. It might have been my imagination, but I felt more power with both installed.

Take a glance at my full Milltek system in the For Sale section of 6speed. The set-up came off my 2006 S.

I installed the Fabspeed maxflow mufflers. Sounds stock puddling around but sounds great when you get on it, no drone at any highway speed. I didn't do the gundo hack (sounds similar to the Fabspeed mufflers) since I wanted to be able to stick my stock mufflers back on if I decided to sell the car, etc. I found the Fabspeed units to have the best sound, the best construction quality, for the best price. You can spend lots more but these worked fine for me.

I just did the Gundo Hack and Love it. I was going to get the AWE cans, but decided for the money I can't go wrong with the Gundo. If I did not like it I was only spending $200.....but I love it. I am so glad I did not spend the $1200+ for what I am equally as happy with for $200. Now I will end up getting the AWE cats with the money I saved....Anyone got a pair of used one's they want to sell?

I've heard some say that they can pass the smog test with 200 cell cats if they get them hot just prior to the test. Seems a little hit or miss, but possible. When I had them on my Targa a few years ago, my backup plan was to put the stock cats back on for the test if necessary.
