what would youd do - 997 targa 4s or turbo convertible?

I have an '08 targa 4s, midnight blue. I have seen a beautiful macademia metall. turbo convertible in the neighborhood.

Which is rarer? Which do you think has more collectible value?
I mean the targa is beautiful, but it is quite tame. I looked into bolting a turbo kit to the targa, this will run $12-15k. Moreover, I tend to stick with stock - in some ways why tinker with something that is already so freakin amazing....

What would you do ?

I got the targa in the summer 2010 with 30k miles - however within the first week, cyl6 scored, so then porsche replaced with rebuilt factory engine, so now with about 6500miles on the engine.....otherwise the body is 9/10.

I would go with the Turbo Cab.

Did porsche rebuild your original engine or did they give you a rebuilt engine from another vehicle? I ask because this will def impact the future value of your car if you keep it long enough to see it become a collectable (20,30,40, years). If you have a non original engine in your car, that is another reason to go with the Turbo. (again though, this is only important if you plan on keeping either car long enough with hopes that it will become collectable).

A cab is not a targa and a targa is not a cab. I wish Porsche made the targa an option on the turbo.

Significant price difference between the two (what $30M+?) all things being equal. As far as being collectible only time will tell, but most 911's don't become collectible for many years. I think of the 911 was a mass produced, high performance sports car that holds value after a certain period of depreciation. If you hold the car long enough that it becomes collectible, I suspect the price won't matter as any car held that long will because you really have grown attached to the car.

Mechanically the turbo is a different machine and I am told with a very, very strong engine with lower compression that can be modded heavily. I have only driven a 997 turbo once and it was a complete blast, a different feel to the car with the turbo kicking in. Drive a turbo for a weekend and see what you think.

guys thanks - the engine is rebuilt from porsche, so not the original - that is probably in another car by now.
my wife thinks i am crazy, but i am not getting the open air feeling i want , i guess. thanks for the advice - and I will take a nice long test drive first.....

i went with the targa initially b/c i have my kid in the back w car seat and was concerned about the exposure in the convertible.

For me the convertible is a no brainer. You, however have to evaluate your needs, your parking issues, your preferences and, oh yeah, YOUR preferences. If you want a Cab. why did you buy a Targa? I suggest deciding what you need, want and love before wasting another penny on a different car.

This has to come down to how you like to drive the car. I can only guess at what motivates you, but here is a start at an analysis:

Pro Targa 4S:
Normal aspirated engine is most predictable in response and has best exhaust tone. Targa is rare and gives something like a roll shell with a good amount of openess.
Good security when parked (no soft parts to cut)

Pro Turbo Cab:
Fully open, Tru cab
Turbo power/torque is way beyond 4S
You can say you have a Porsche turbo.

Drive the turbo cab and see if it does anything for you. Assuming it does, it comes down to a financial decision...is it smart to make the change or costly? Your call...

I vote Turbo as well. You also get the all wheel drive with that H.P. It would be tough to turn that down.

Get one of each!!!

I just bought my 997.1 Targa 4S and I am already looking at getting a 993 Turbo.

You know the benefits of the Targa, nothing will match that panoramic roof and you and your passangers get to enjoy that every single second you are behind the wheel and driving. As far as the Turbo goes, the times you really get to enjoy that are short (it doesn't take that many seconds to be going 20 over the speed limit).

My vote is Targa!

porsche should make a turbo targa. thats probably the only 911 mash-up that hasn't been produced yet.
