Costco Warranty - Yea or Nay!?!?
Costco Warranty - Yea or Nay!?!?
I purchased my first p-car (06' C2S) last month with around 25K miles. I now have 27.2K miles on it. After doing some research and calling around, Costco is the only company that will offer Warranty for my P-Car. They quoted me $5250 for 6yrs and/or 60K miles with a $500 deductible (out of pocket)
for every service.
I know the 997.1 are well built machines so is it really worth paying that much for the warranty?

No, I wouldn't. All of the history assembled for the Insurance Companies exposure is based and biased by the 996 and it's IMS shaft problems. You should not experience any major engine problems.
The IMS problem was not just a 996 problem - it carried over into the early years of the 997.1 until the IMS was eliminated in the 997.2.
With 500$ deductible it would seem you are protecting yourself against total engine failure (ie ims) and little else, esp after you factor in the 5 grand out of pocket already. Then you have to concern yourself with who will do the work should the worst happen. Your 06 (like mine I hope) is relatively immune from ims failure unless it is early 05 production. If it is you can do a search here by engine #or better have some one visually inspect for updated bearing. Should you have the older bearing it can be replaced for peace of mind. Given the updated bearing as in most 06's I suggest you drive it like it was meant be driven and don't look back
Thanks for all the feedback. Since mine is a late 06 (November) model built, I'm not too worry about the IMS issue (cross my fingers).
Guess I'm leaning against purchasing the warranty and just drive and have fun with it.

How long are you going to keep the car?
Most decent warranties will pro rate the cost and you can either transfer the warranty to the new owner or recoup some of the $5200 when you sell.
I'm not with with the other posters here and I would recommend getting the warranty. Costco does not require a PPI if I remember correctly. I bought an Audi warranty for my 2007 A6 4.2 @ 42K miles ($4K). In one year it amassed over $6000 in repairs - that was two trips to the dealer (sunroof $2K, leaking rear coolant pipes requiring engine removal $4K). Even with that I received a check for 75% ($3K) of what I spent on the warranty when I sold the car.
In your case it will cost you $866 per year, if nothing breaks. One repair and it will be less. If you get tired of the car after three years you can get half you money back or transfer it to the new owner - which will make the car so much more attractive to any buyer.
My understand regarding IMS is that although rare it can happen to any 997.1 car.
Good luck and enjoy your new car.

the quote seems pricey- If i was getting it i'd go for no more than $250 deductible. i got quote from costco for my 07 TT with 19k miles back in April- it was $4176 for 6 yr/60k with $250 red. $3383 with $500 ded. Didn't buy it cause i still have CPO left but asked what it would cost in a year or so- I think they said price went up if car is over 25k miles-
try calling sunset porsche for the Fidelity platinum warranty- ask for preferred price. (reenlist) i had that on my 02 996 that i sold & on wife's 07 Boxster S now.

That price is high. I have a 4 year warranty with no deductible. I think it was around $4k. I have used it for a new water pump, drive shaft (or something like that), and alternator wiring harness. I'm almost up to the value of the warranty in repairs and I still have 2.5 years left on it.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give Sunset Porsche a call tomorrow and see what type of quote they can offer me, hopefully it will be cheaper than Costco.
I'm planning on keeping the car for more than 5 yrs, that's the intention but who knows what will happen.
So extended warranty is something I would like to have if the price is right.

Costco's warranty prices change at 25k and 35k. Last month on an '05 they quoted me $3383 for <25k, $4373 for 25k to 35k, and $6187 for >35k with a $500 deductible. They also said an '06 would be the same amount.
For me, I would buy the warranty for an '05, but probably not an '06.

I have 2008 with little less than 13k miles, I purchase the costco warranty for 6yrs/60k miles with $500 deductible for $3500. The car was in near new condition but I went ahead with the warranty for peace of mind. All 997.1 have a potential for IMS failure, regardless of updated bearing or not. Also, any parts of the repair will cost over couple thousands, warranty is the only way to offset these future unexpected issues. I would recommend you shop around with reputable company, there are hundreds of companies out there but they are not the same. Regarding $5k for costco warranty seem high, but you get your money back if you decide to sell your car early. Think of it as insurance expense, you dont get your money back if you didn't have an accident anyway. If this is honda and Toyota, I wouldn't buy warranty but P ride is pricey when it need repair. GL
Thanks to "bgrpph", I gave Sunset Porsche a call about their Fidelity platinum warranty and they came back with the following quote which is cheaper than Costco.
4yr/48K = $3,920 + 8% CA sale tax with a $250 deductible
5yr/60K = $4,587 + 8% CA sale tax with a $250 deductible
6yr/60K = $4,697 + 8% CA sale tax with a $250 deductible
Since I'm going to keep the car for some time, I'm considering their 6yr/60K option with 0% interest for 2yrs.
Thanks again for everyone's input, it made my decision a lot easier.
