Whining sound coming from engine area while driving

I've noticed a slight but definitely noticeable high pitch "whizzing" sound coming from the engine area. I have a 2005 997 C2, tiptronic.

The high pitch sound is independent of the engine noise. The pitch of the noise will get higher/lower relative to speed of the car. Tires are proper pressure, lots of tread remaining.

Any ideas? Belts, intake, fluids, etc.
I tried to do a search but not much info came up.
Maybe alternator or a pulley?
Let me know.

Sounds like an alternator, how are your fluid levels?I would take my auto stethoscope and probe alternator and such,if you don't have one you can always use a long screwdriver or piece of plastic pvc and hold to your ear...just be careful!Good luck!

All fluid levels are good, just don't know how to check the transmission fluid?

I've had that same issue and posted on it in the past. No idea what it is - been going on for over a year/4000 miles. It doesn't happen all the time though (or I just stop noticing), but did happen on the way to work this morning. Of course I take it in an they can't find anything. If you search here and rennlist you will find mention of it here and there but no definitive answer. If you figure it out please post an update.

I found out what the issue was on my car. It was the lower tensioner pulley bearing. Pulled it off, had to press the bearing out, put a new one in and worked just like new! No whining!
