997.2 Newbie Question: Gas Pump & Octane Level
997.2 Newbie Question: Gas Pump & Octane Level
Hi all,
I'm new to the world of Porsche and I've been driving my newly-purchased 2010 C2 for a few weeks now. Everything about the car is great except for when I'm at the gas station filling it up.
I've filled up several times now at various gas stations, but every time I inserted the pump into the gas tank and set the lever on the pump, it will automatically "unclick" after a few seconds, which is what it supposed to do when the gas tank is full. I found myself having to estimate how many gallons I should put in and I never leave the gas station with a full tank.
Does anyone have this problem?
Also, I was reading the label inside the tank door today while gassing up, and it says I need 93 octane minimum. Is that right? I'm in Southern California and I really don't see anything more than 91 at Mobile, Shell or Chevron.
Thanks for the help!!

Common issue. Pull the nozzle out slightly until the flow is continuous. Because of the filler location, be careful leaving the nozzle unmanned as I have heard of the nozzle popping out with the auto shutoff occasionally and could damage your vehicle.
Good luck,
Dave
You need this adapter. Call you local Porsche dealer. They should be able to set you up with one. I had the same problem at the pump, after explaining to my local Porsche dealer (Rusnak Pasadena), they asked me to come in and the service advisor fitted one on my car.
Also happens to me when tank gets to 3/4 full or so. I think it's been covered here before. Solution: turn the handle to 9 O'clock position. I have seen attendants with handle flipped all the way to 12:00. (For reference, standard down position would be 6:00). Here in OR we can't pump our own gas so I'm coaching attendants all the time.
im with scoper....I turn the nozzle(handle) clockwise to 9 oclock, works like a charm for a full tank..

interesting, I have always put the pump at 6 O clock and never had this issue you speak about. Always clicks when full only.... As advised I do keep on hand on the handle at all times.
+1, but I warn that if you do NOT put the nozzle in a 6 o'clock, you can not depend on the auto shutoff. The auto shutoff is designed to work with a nozzle that is perpendicular to the ground.
I had the same problem and was given the adapter by Barrier Porsche (thanks, guys!) when my car was in for servicing. I think it's a $6-7 item if you have to buy it, and I know Suncoast also sells them.
Despite the adaptor, I would still occasionally have the problem, but only at certain stations. It appears to be a function of the nozzle type used by a given station and the effect on displaced air flow out of the tank (the adaptor is essentially a spacer with extra air gaps). For the problem stations (which I now tend to avoid) 9 o'clock or 12 o'clock works sufficiently well for these.

I also had Barrier install the adapter and agree, it lessens the occurrence of the issue.
The rate of occurrence seems also driven by the flow rate the pumps were set at, as pumps that pump high rate cut off more often I think.

Hmmm...mine does not kickback at all. But I'm always standing there too. After putting 32 gallons in my F150, standing there for 10-12 gallons of 93 is no sweat! :-) Typically the kid that works where I get my 93 comes out to talk about cars anyway.
The rotated handle does the trick for me, but to perpetuate the stereotype it would be funny to flip the handle 180° to the 12 o'clock position and fling the hose over your shoulder like a fuel guy working the pits at Daytona or Sebring.
