"For every Porsche it sold last year, Volkswagen booked about $23,200 in operating profit, for a margin of 18 percent, according to an annual report it released this morning..."
Yeah, nice profit.
When I read it, i remembered the other side of the coin:
Average American family savings account balance $3,800
Percent of working Americans who are not saving for retirement 40 %
Percent of American families who have no savings at all 25 %
Average amount saved for retirement $35,000

I really don't think its that much. The average price here in Australia for a new 991 (C2S PDK) is around AUD $260,000 (USD $234600) without options. That is drive away and includes GST, LCT, Stamp Duty, Registration, CTP and Dealer Charges. Even taking the taxes off its still around AUD $165,000 (USD $149000).
Smaller market (Australians only buy around 600 Porsches - all models, each year), transport, right hand drive and high taxes all account for our higher vehicle costs.
So USD $23,0000 (AUD $25450) is only around 15% margin. Thats about the same, if not less than the Toyota Dealer makes selling light trucks (Hilux, Landcruiser etc.) to the mining companies at super low bulk rates.

Have you thought about relocating? You can come here and get all kinds of free $hit if you're a foreigner ...SBA loans, housing, free baby delivery
Yeah we get a lot of that already, universal healthcare etc. But with 23 million people covering an area slightly larger than the US taxes will always be higher. We do get paid a lot more though - so it kind of levels out.
singapore is the same if not more. even a new civic with required COE certificate is about 90 grand usd.
$h!t the gov't subsidized flats (small condos that 80% of the population lives in) are about 1/2 million.
the kicker is that Singapore has per capita the highest %age of millionaires ! crazy.
