Reimporting a 997 from Germany

I'm stationed over here in Germany and looking to pick up a 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S presently in Belgium. The owner brought the car in from Illinois about 2010 and changed the rear bumper to Euro spec (removing the "bumperettes"). Does anyone know if upon return to the US next year I would need to replace the Euro rear bumper back to US spec? Also, the engine was replaced by Porsche (at a dealership in Switzerland) under warranty about 35K KMs ago (car now has 88K KM), any issues you see with the engine replacement or is it a bonus having a newer engine?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry....no answers but two questions:

1. Why was the engine replaced?
2. Have you looked into what a similar car can be bought for in the US?

I don't recall ever reading about someone buying a 997 in Europe for the purpose of bringing it to the US. Between what's typically higher prices there and the shipping costs, it's hard to see how the numbers add up unless you've got something really special going on.

I would think you will be fine without the "bumperettes" the bumper is still intact. As far as the engine, was it a possible IMS failure?I would imagine with the new engine the IMS bearing has been upgraded. Good luck and have fun with your new p-car!

You should definitely investigate the U.S. requirements very thoroughly. I would imagine that you would have to bring the car back to U.S. DOT specs. That may mean not only replacing the bumper, but also changing things like the speedo back to U.S. standards. I can't imagine that it would be cost effective for you unless you are buying the car for absolutely dirt cheap. Even then, it may not be worth it.
