997.2 Play in steering wheel

I bought a '09 911 4s PDK Convertible laste week. Now, I find that there is a little play in the steering wheel. It can move a little bit to both sides without the car turs either way. The sensation in the steering wheel is also very sensitive to anything on the road meaning that it will pull a little to either side when the wheels pass a little bump on the road. This is more pronounced at higher speeds.

If the road is perfect there is no vibration on the steering wheel, but as soon as one of the wheels meets something on the tarmac you feel it very much on the steering wheel.

Any advice?

How is your alignment? When you get the alignment done?

Alignment was done recently and it does not feel like that either.

I found a thread which describes the problem very precisely. And, he also found a solution which was a loose u-joint on the steering column.

My 2009 C2S is the same way.

I purchased it used with 26K miles, now I have 64K miles. This always bothered me. Very slight movement, left-right-left and you definitely have a bit of play in there. My 2000 Boxster S never had this.

I am a bit disappointed in this... my Porsche tech said it was normal. hmmmmm....

Peace

mine sounds pretty much the same. That s how they are. Don t forget it s made for performance first then comfort. Mine moves slightly (back and forth) when the road is not perfectly smooth. Even though the wheel moves a bit, it feels solid.

My 2009 S is the same. I don't worry about it too much. The problem diminished significantly after I went with 20" wheels and 25 profile tires.

I've had several 911's and non of those have felt like this in the steering wheel. Therefore I went to The Porsche dealer yesterday and they torqued all the joints around the steering column which resulted in a completely different and more firm sensation. There is almost no play in the steering wheels now! - I'm very happy!

I agree with you, my .2 Turbo zero play. My .1 C4s didn't either.
