2005 997S : bad fuel economy

Just bought a 2005 997 carrera S.

Had two pre-purchase inspection done before buying the car. Everything was fine according to both Porsche dealer and indy garage.

Coils and plugs been changed 2 months ago at the dealership.

Only squeezed 300km (185miles) out of my full tank of oct.94.

Isnt it anormally low ?

Mileage is 50/50 city/highway with a hint of spirited driving. No track

Consistently averaging 15.7 mpg with my 06S under what may or may not be similar conditions. Hway mileage at 60 mph in 6th is 26+. Normal around town about 12/14.
Driving hard 10 or less? It is all relative and subject to what you think is "hard" and how you drive. Guys here have reported 12 mpg before. Sounds like you are
in good company. Enjoy.

Huh? Not sure if this is a yes or no to op's question. You really getting 40 miles on a tank? My reading comprehension has been failing me of late.

What is that in RPM's? 2200? Isn't that lugging the motor? Always keep it above 3K.

I'm averaging 17 around town and highway at 70mph on cruise a solid 28-30mpg. Rpm are about 2,200-2,300. It's Florida so it is FLAT everywhere here. Running Mobile 93 octane fuel. Nitro filled tires. I've always thought this was great mileage. A tone better than my 79 SC air cooled P-car.

I've always wondered about "keep it above 3K" practice. Does this mean you guys only go up to 2nd gear around town?

I generally get around 12.5 or so mostly city driving. Mixed may go to 15. All highway 26. I have heard that at 90mph I get around 29.

I've had my car for a year and have never averaged less than 18 with a mix of mostly city and highway driving with some spirited driving thrown in..

Are you sure you are filling your tank completely?

I average about 300mi to a tankful, or when the remaining range is about 30 miles. I average right under 19mpg, with about 50/50 city/highway driving.

This is why you have 6 gears Pete. Pkwy driving, no problem. Downshift when required Besides I never drive that slow unless I'm doing a mpg test. Tx for the concern tho.

Heh heh. He's worried about lugging on pkway in 6th gear at 60 mph. In the lower gears you have plenty of torque and flexibility. Just keep revs up in the power band (3-4 k) in case you have to accelerate out of, or into? trouble.

Yup I understand 6 gears and all that. At 2200 rpm in 6th your motor and drive train are feeling ALOT of stress. The car is happiest above 3K and beyond. Your wallet be happier too.

Actually the car will run all day at 2200 in 6th steady speed, flat ground without a hint of stress. But thanks for the second time

Fuel mileage is directly related to the wight of ones right foot.
Having said that, I've managed from just over 500km to a low of 300 km with "spirited" driving
