Ok, I have a 997.1 c4. I am facing the need for a rebuild of my m96.05. I also have a turbo kit installed.

So I was wondering what would be involved in swapping in the turbo mezger engine altogether.

Anybody ever fully convert their non turbo to the turbo motor?

It's already been done - there is a 3.6 Mezger in a 997.1 non-turbo - the GT3

Thanks. I meant does the tranny line up. Or do i have to transplant that as well. Do the motor mounts even line up? Thanks in advance to those actually willing to provide meaningful insight.

Appreciate it guys.

Can't help you with the question about if the Mezger engine bolts to the your 997.1 C4 transmission but the Mezger engine is (to state the obvious) tuned to be turbo-charged so you would need to keep the turbos (and exhaust with the wideband O2 sensors) with the engine. And the intercoolers and come up with a custom intake system to accommodate the intercoolers. And the DME with probably a custom "tune" to deal with the fueling the engine requires.

Otherwise, if you drop the turbos and wish to run the engine naturally aspirated you would need to remove the factory cams and install cams suitable for a N/A engine. Also, the Mezger Turbo engine runs rather low compression (9.4:1 IIRC) compared to something a bit over 11:1 the N/A engines run so ideally the compression ratio should be raised probably with different pistons. In this state the engine would probably require a custom "tune" as well.

Given the considerable differences between the car's N/A engine and the Mezger engine the risk is very high one would end up with something less than the sum of its parts.

If you had access to a healthy Turbo engine you would probably be better off selling it and using the money and the proceeds from selling your 997.1 C4 for if you are so inclined towards buying a 997 Turbo with the Mezger engine.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. I already have a turbo kit on my 997.1 C4. I am in the process of building the motor but ran across the opportunity to buy a used 3.6 mezger turbo motor for a decent price. I was just curious if i could transplant that motor and build that instead of building my existing m96.05 motor.

I think that what Macster was attempting to say was that, yes, you can transplant the Mezger engine into your 997. BUT, the complexities of doing that and the associated costs would exceed what you could buy a 997 turbo for, if you were to sell both your 997 and the Mezger engine.

If you got a "good" deal on the Mezger, you will make money on selling it, since these engines are rare and expensive. But, in addition to the Mezger, you will have to engineer the intercoolers and the ECU. Those added costs when added to the cost of the Merger and the cost of installing all these parts will leave you with a vehicle that is worth less then the sum of the parts.....as Macster put it. And, a 997 that has been modded to accommodate the Meager engine will sell for much less than a proper 997 or a 997tt. Once you begin heavily modifying any car, the value of the vehicle plummets.

Unless you have sentimental value in your 997, it's probably more cost effective to sell all that you have and source a "proper" 997tt.
