996TurboFan is an unknown quantity at this point
996 Turbo recommended oil

I've got 72K mi. on my Turbo and until recently, I've used M1 0W-40 oil. The past 4 oil changes though I switched to Castrol Edge, as it's made in Germany and no questioning their quality control!
However, this oil change I'm going with the Motul 8100 XCess 5W-40. Just wondering if this is a prudent move; I've read that it's a "one-way path" and I'll need to stick with it henceforth as there's a possible issue with seals swelling.

That oil is Porsche A40 approved so you should be fine. It's my 2nd choice oil behind JGR DT40, but what I use in my Cayenne Turbo S to use up the rest of my supply. Better than the M1 anyway.

This is the wrong forum, but I used 0W-40 in my 996T for years with no issue, I can't comment on Motul-- Good luck! KH

My opinion it wasn't necessarily a prudent move to switch from 0w-40 to Castrol Edge.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

IOWs, your Turbo engine has covered 72K miles with no issues. Hard to believe it won't cover that many more and then some no issues. (My 2003 Turbo covered around double that number with Mobil 1 0w-40. My Boxster 3 maybe closer to 4 times that number of miles running Mobil 1 0w-40.)

Also, the new Mobil 1 New Life 0W-40 is supposed to be a very good oil and is Porsche approved. (A40 on the label.)

Here's a link:

If it doesn't get that cold where you are Mobil makes a 5w-50 oil (not a typo for 15w-50!). A year or two back I switched to this oil year 'round here in CA for both my Turbo and my Boxster. It doesn't get that cold here -- barely below freezing at night just a time or two in the winter -- but gets plenty hot in the summer months. Triple digits hot.
