Bore score affecting all 997.1 C2S C4S

I am in the process of buying a 2005 C2S. I have talked to couple of Indy to do PPI on car before purchasing and most of them if not all are strongly suggesting to do bore score on the car as part of PPI as according to them it is pretty much affecting all engines between 05-08 3.8L engine and sooner or later it is going to happen.

How true is this statement? After reading alot of information on here and other forums, I am hesitant to buy any 997.1 S module

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

Not true....no bore score on my 2006. I have it scoped each time I do plugs which is every 20K. Just did it again two weeks ago after plugs/coils and still smooth. So at 60K all is well. I follow maintenance to a tee and usually do things more often.

Seems to be more of an issue in colder climates. I'm in SoCal.

BTW, the DFI engines 2009+ have bore score as well.

No issues here, 2005 S with 79k miles now. Stop believing the hype..

I am not believing the hype but when an 2 or 3 Indy shops tells you they have seen it in pretty much every engine between 05 to 08 but in different shape then what do you say?

Just extra money for them, it happens but it's very rare, if you are that worry about it, just save longer for a 997.2.

Not sure how relevant, but I've had the heads off two 8cyl Cayennes, one with <70K miles, and both had very bad scoring. One was from Chicago, the other from Michigan. That's why my Cayenne is now a V6.

You could always just get a Kia or something......

Attention all 05-08 3.8L owners, sell your car now!hilarious

Can you tell me how is this post (or troll) adding value to my thread?

It's not a troll per se....but this subject has been beaten to death.

Any car not properly maintained will sooner or later get payback from the owner. With the IMS it's just the matter of cost.

Buy your 911 after a full and complete PPI is performed. Maintain it very well, drive the car like a 911.

Or just buy the Kia (sarcasm).

30,000 mile Bore Scoring

I have a 2007 Carrera S with only 30,000 miles and engine failure due to bore scoring. Never mistreated.

Unless there's more than one Reston I assume you're in Reston VA. Where I'm going with this is that there seems to be some consensus that 997.1's that have spent much of their life in parts of the country that sees colder temperatures during the fall, winter and early spring season are more prone to bore scoring than cars that have lived in southern states most of their life. No scientific statistics on this than I'm aware of. Just feedback from affected owners (and some Porsche mechanics as I recall it).

For the mechanics you've spoken to who say it will "pretty much affect all -05-08 engines sooner or later", based on what I've read here and elsewhere over the years that's grossly misleading.

Bore score is mainly from material between cylinder and sleeve

I think its something to do on a PPI before a new car but then don't worry about it. Obviously monitor for symptoms of failure like you would any car but the reported numbers are low.

There is so much more to the bore scoring equation than that. You really need to watch Jake Raby's new videos on bore scoring...
