Always empty
 

Hi Folks,

I got in my car this morning and saw that the low fuel light was on and the needle was just about all the way to E. I thought it strange, since I seemed to recall that I had about 1/2 tank of fuel. I also got the warning light that said I had 25 miles of travel left.

I drove about 12 miles to a gas station. (Their pumps went out of order in the middle of my refueling. I had to wait ten minutes to finish. This is just the kind of Monday I'm having, I guess.) I filled it up, started the car, and saw the same warnings and needle position.

Anything I can do about this short of taking it in for service?

How much did it take to fill it up? Was it only a half tank down? If so, sounds like a sensor issue and I would bring it to the dealer or an indy shop. In the interim, I would reset my trip odometer after every fill up and refuel when I have gone about 200 - 250 miles depending on your driving.

I'm not sure how much it took to fill up. The gas pump and its credit card reader BOTH malfunctioned while I was there. I pumped in two shifts with a 15-minute break in between. I was having quite a day. I'm guessing it took a total of a little over half a tank.

The good news is that, later that day, the fuel gauge popped back up to full and the warning lights went out. Weird experience all around. Knock wood, it'll keep working.

There is a float sensor inside tank, that can get wedged around the pipes in there. If all ok, great. If occurs again, back seats can come out to look into the tank.

I had a similar problem with my 997.2 C2. So I came to the conclusion that the fuel level sensor was defective and ordered one. When it came in I then went to my independent shop for install. Well it turns out that it was the "Fuel Pump Flange" and not the fuel level sensor.

So if anyone here is interested, I have a brand new level sensor that if you send me a PM and we'll reach a reasonable deal. BTW, this part seems to fit 911's from 2006 to 2013.
