Looking at buying an 997S or 996 turbo
On one of the track days, a guy I know was running in a 997 S. He's better than I am but my turbo S made up for my lack of talent, at least compared to his. I was quite a bit faster than he was.
Check out best motoring "attack of the carrera" . Gai-San went head to head with a standard 997 vs 997s vs 996 turbo. The 997s 1/4 mile 12.87 and the 996 turbo 1/4 mile 12.2x. The best part of the dvd was the 997s beating the 996 turbo on the track.
The problem with the BMI videos is you have only one good driver (Gan-San), one mediocre driver, and the rest are quite poor. No way the 997S beats the 996TT with anything approaching equal skill.
That explains why he always win. On the track my money is on Gan San. But I believe he did the 1/4 mile with both cars. Damn, now I gotto watch the vid again. Thanks dude this is going to kill me.
I am selling my 2006 997 S cuz relocating for work, will post pics this week when it stops raining. PM if you are interested.

996 tt is for sure faster than 997 S, I had this same debate when I was buying mine. 997 S seems more practical for daily driving, esp if you drive the canyons or short curves. Plus the 997 S is newer w/ more modern technology, 2006 vs a 2004 (when i was lookin, comparing price to price)... IMO.
I think there are a lot of 996TT folks who are still in denial about how their cars compare to the 997S. R&T puts them pretty equal 0-60 and 1/4 mile (the 997S is a shade faster with respect to both). Evo has tested many cars on a 1.8 mile "fast and technical" track, the Bedford Autodrome's West Circuit. This type of track advantages cars that handle well, as opposed to cars with lots of bhp, because there is not a really long strait for high speeds. Here is a sample of times:
Porsche 911 GT3 RS - 1.23.85, 113.4 (mph max speed)
Lambo Gallardo - 1.23.90, 112.4
Ferrari F430 - 1.24.20, 112.2
997S - 1.24.60, 108.2
996TT - 1.26.00, 112.0
Boxter S - 1.28.55, 101.9
997 - 1.28.85, 109.3
SLK55 AMG - 1.29.30, 104.2
Cayenne Turbo - 1.33.65, 99.5 (track was damp in places)
Evo puts the 997S 0-60 at 4.8 seconds, and the 996TT at 4.1. It gives both cars a 5 star rating. The TT will favor longer straights.

Whats the ring times isnt the 997s at 8:02 and the 996tt at 7:56??
like the previous post, 997 is newer car, better suspension should handle better (lighter too), therefore quicker on short technical tracks
Longer straights favor 996tt, but since you can pick up a 996tt and mod it to be fast as heck for less than a 997, its a pretty dang hard deal to beat.
Bottom line depends on what you want.
