Changing my 996 Turbo for a 997 Carrera S

I have an 02 Turbo and I am pretty set on the idea of changing it for a Carrera S coupe. I just wondered if anyone here has made the transition and how the cars compared, was it a good move or a bad one?
I am bored with the Turbo for several reasons, I don't like the solid black color, I want a tiptronic, the suspension (JIC cross) is too hard and the exhaust is a bit too noisy (Fabspeed)
Let me know if anyone has made the same change over

seems like you would be downgrading in terms of performance. Why not just change the exhaust and suspension back to stock?

before i settled on my car i test drove a 996tt. i also test drove a 996 gt3. i found the 997s to be the best of both, at least for what i wanted. for me the tt was too "soft", it was very easy to drive fast and there was power everywhere. i hated the fact that there was no peak, it felt like the 55k amg motor. to me the tt felt like a gt car, not a sports car. the 997s feels way more pure to drive and the steering isn't spoiled by 4wd. the gt3 was (way) too low for everyday . if i wanted an auto i would have gone w/ another amg, p w/ auto is a nono in my opinion

I like the TT it goes like a rocket, Autothority chip, EVOMS cold airbox, EVO diverter valves, 100 Cell cats and Fabspeed exhaust. I bought it modded and now regret it, I also am sick of the solid black, I don't have time to detail it enough although there's nothing better when it's just been cleaned.
I thought that a 997 Carrera 2S would make a good change, seems the values aren't too far apart although the TT's are absolutely bombing now.

I sold my '05 GT3 for the Carrera S and have not regretted a thing. Living in NY the streets are horrible and I really could not drive the GT3 anywhere without removing the front spoiler and feeling like I was going to break something because it was just too stiff for street use.

I think the S is the perfect balance for someone who wants the perfect Porsche that can be driven everyday.

As far as power is concerned, I have run a few stock 996TT's and hung in much better than I expected. In the total scope of things drag racing does not even make it close to the top of my list anyway.

Having owned several Turbos as well, many ask me when I will be upgrading to a new Turbo and I tell them that I just cannot find a reason why. To me this car is perfect.

Lightbulb

Maybe you should wait for the rumored 08, especialy if you want an auto gear box, as the new dual clutch unit is supposed to be much better than the tip, also the extra power from the new direct injection won't hurt (+/-370hp for the S) and then add the X51 and were talking +/- 400hp which would help to ease the transition. I also think the new front and rear with LED's will be a nice touch as well.

The S is a hell of a car, it run's the 'ring faster than a 996TT as well. My only issue was the less desirable m96/7 motor(and other lesser drivetrain components) and the 'turbo-land' price. The 4S I speced out was well over 110k, that's a TT.
I agree, might want to lay your hands on a stock suspension/mufflers before you decide. You'd have an easier time trading /selling it as a stocker anyway. A guy has a bunch of stock TT stuff in the FS section now.
Just a thought.

I would suggest you get a 997tt .. coming from a moded 996tt, the 997s will feel lacking.

if I was starting from scratch, I'd go straight for the new 997S... after having had the taste of a TT, you're gonna have a hard time adjusting to normally aspirated power versus "turbo power"... but it sounds you're looking for a total change! tiptronic, low-noise exhaust, etc... maybe you should buy a Cadillac! hehehe! just kidding buddy... go for the 997S... I got one, and it's a great drive... but ain't no TT :-)

Well, I would be the poster child for your switch--I went from an 01 996 Turbo to my Club Coupe (X51 997 S) with tiptronic; I like the Club Coupe better in every way. It launches much faster than the Turbo ever did, sounds great doing it, and it's a lighter car. I do not miss the Turbo one bit. You should get the Sports Chrono with a tiptronic or you will seriously regret it; in the sports mode it dramatically changes the shift patterns/logic in addition to the throttle response (that you also get with a manual).

Are you saying you believe it launches much faster than the Turbo because of the Tip?

never had a 996tt but absolutely love the S. it looks very classy and i love how it sounds, it's a little less showy than the 996tt, but has more power than you will ever use on the road . I'd recommend the 997S 100%.

I think you will be dissapointed in the lack of power in the 997, get a 997 tt or keep your turbo.
