67-69 Camaro or 70-72 Chevelle?
I'm looking into getting a 67-69 Camaro, or a 70-72 Chevelle. I just wanted some of your opinions, especially from some of you who might have owned both.
|
Go with whatever car appeals to you the most. With these older cars you have to spend some time and money to make them handle and ride well. Chevelles have been climbing more in value but are still cheaper than Camaros on average. There are more performance suspension options for the Camaro by a wide margin and the used OEM/performance part market is much bigger as well so that is something to consider. Nice Chevelles are more rare to see on the street usually as well.
|
yea, i'm looking for a project. something I can have custom, I've driven both, and like both designs, but I can have 2 projects going on at once. I have been checking craigslist and have found quite a few chevelles around my area for really cheap ($7500 for a decent one).
|
Chevelle's can be found really cheap, and they both look good. For the money go with the chevelle..but If money was not a problem Camaro! Just my opinion.
|
why not a '69 chevelle? they can be had for a lot cheaper than a '70
|
67 Camaro!!!
never been a big chevelle fan, always thought they were too bloated (esp. when comparing the rear to the front) 66 chevelle though...........that i'd rock the **** out of! |
1st gen Camaros are cool. '69 is the year to have resale value wise though.
I love '70 Chevelles, my buddies dad just sold a mint one hes had for years. Needed to be painted, but it sold in a matter of hours @ $10k on craigslist. He was getting calls for weeks, then we found it posted up on the internet for like $17k or something rediculous. I think I'd rather go '69 Camaro. Yeah they've been done before, but the aftermarket is crazy for them. It would be a lot of fun to build one nicely. |

I've owned 3 '69 Camaro's over the years, and can tell you that they do not ride nearly as well as a '70-'72 Chevelle does, since the Chevelle has a full frame under it (while the Camaro doesn't).
I have two Chevelles now, a '69 and a '70, and think you should consider a '69 as well if you like that body style. Here's a few pictures of my cars. Attachment 498925 Attachment 498926 |

From a pure performance standpoint, the Camaro is far lighter to begin with. So automatically you have superior power/weight ratio, more nimble handling, etc.
I may be biased :) |

Its missing the part above the the grill, you meant to do that?
|
LOL, that piece wasn't installed because of the after market fiberglass hood. It was left up to the owner if he wanted installed. Now I know what you mean. Sorry. I thought you mean the wheel wells because they didn't want the trims installed.
|
It's a tough call. Both are great cars, and have obviously become more expensive in recent years. Depends on what your performance goals are (if any) I would say. The Camaro is gonna be much lighter and more performance oriented. I prefer the 64-67 Chevelle myself, but love all Chevelles. Ultimately you gotta be happy with it. I like driving my 66 but I can't wait for my 68 to be done!
Good luck! Post pics of what you end up buying. |

LOL! To each his own, but I am glad your customer made those design decisions on that thing and not you. Not digging the sidepipes. I can appreciate trying to be original and unique, but ouch! And fiberglass hoods for musclecars fit like crap. Hey, I guess as long as he is happy with it. |
My father has both a 67 Camaro RS and a 72 Chevelle in his collection...I must say I much rather prefer the looks of the Camaro and it is also a bit more fun to drive. I agree the resale is better on the '69s though.
Camaro FTW! |
FLASH

That rendering was done using a pic of Penny and then modifying it a little. I had all sorts of wheels/color combos/stripes done and this was the one I liked the most. |

Camaros look better.

67 Chevelle SS
|
definitely the camaro
|
My first car was a 68 Camaro SS convertible. I still wish I had it. It was a great car I had tons of fun in. I would go with the Camaro.
|
Camaro :)
Since I am starting on a 1968 RS/SS Convertible. It is very good shape now but I want to keep it and street rod it out. There are so many Coupes Modded out but not a lot of convertibles. I like Flash's render of the 68 in a charcoal color. Dave(flash) thanks for the reply. I sent you an email on my thoughts. I hope to speak to you soon about my ideas. So many things to think about. Back on Topic... :) CAMARO :) then a Chevelle. |

WOW, that 302 is absolutely gorgeous! Good luck with the sale.
|
RE: Camaro or Chevelle
There are some real affordable Camaro and Chevelle project cars at www.ArizonaWholesaleClassics.com.

|
69 Camaro with the DZ 302 is a really neat car. I've owned Chevelles and due to the full frame they do take the horsepower better and smoother. I like the 65 SS Chevelle. Their all cool!

+1 on the '69 Camaro.. yes, there are a lot of them in play, but there's a reason for that.
However, I'm biased :) Attachment 498511 |
