track suspension setup

I am in the process of picking up a set of KW v3 coilovers for my DD/ weekend warrior. I understand the principles of suspension and the only thing hanging me up is the setup of compression versus rebound damping, which should be stiffer, and is there even some kind of formula to follow? I have a feeling it's just going to be loads of trial and error, however i'm just looking for a good baseline to start from.
Vehicle spec's:
2001 Vw passat 1.8 turbo, manual trans
3300lbs dry weight
1.4 bar ecu remap
k&n fliter, modified high flow airbox
17/215/45 dunlop direzza z1 star spec's

tia guys, looking to get into some hillclimbs in the VT/NH area this summer.
im also aware of the countless better vehicles for the job, but i like what i've got.
