How has the turbo changed throughout its various models?

I was wondering if the turbo aficionados could quickly recollect how the turbo has changed throughout any model span. I'm looking for some of the larger changes like power, engines, exhaust, wheels, exterior bits etc.. Since each turbo model is around for a long stretch, I'm interested in how Porsche keeps it fresh. Might help me gain an understanding of what to expect with the 991's lifespan. Thanks in advance.

This is purely speculation on my part. Porsche is basically dialing the 911 out of the 911! The 356/911 with their engine pretty much behind the rear axle meant that the car had to be driven in a particular fashion. Once mastered it could be a very quick car particularly under acceleration and braking. The key to driving one of these around a corner was to go in slow and come out fast and you rolled on the accelerator only when you knew that you would not back out of it, i.e., off throttle snap oversteer.

Through the ages, 356,911.....993,...997, 991 Porsche has basically been stretching the wheel base and moving the engine more inwards. Also, the interior has been getting more and more plush and the ride "softer" as in more compliant.

I believe against the mid-engine cars the 911 platform is pretty much at its limit, thus I wager that Porsche is moving to make the 911 more of a sport touring car and will transition to the 918 platform as their sports car platform.
